Furthermore, if a monk goes to the house of learners, any of those prohibited by the monastic training, without being invited, and takes food or eats with his own hand, then that monk should go to an external garden and confess to the monks, saying: 'Venerable ones, I have committed an act that should not be reproached, now I confess.' Thus confessing, this Dharma should also be confessed. Thus the training is established. The place is Vaishali, the people are the group of six, the affliction is seeking competition, and the fault is breaking the training and entering a lay household. At that time, the Licchavis of Vaishali were discussing in the assembly hall, and seeing the monks coming out of the house of the military commander Siṃha, those who were not faithful said: 'Friends, since the time that the military commander Siṃha has believed in the ascetic Gautama, his gains have been decreasing, being exhausted, and being depleted.' Those who were faithful said: 'Friends, if one believes in the Blessed One, how could his gains decrease, be exhausted, and be depleted?' Thus, the military commander Siṃha, in the presence of the Blessed One, having seen the truth, cut off the practice of farming, therefore his gains have been decreasing, being exhausted, and being depleted. The Licchavis of Vaishali consulted and said to the farmers of the military commander Siṃha: 'Friends, why do you not till the fields of the military commander Siṃha? Is it that you do not receive wages?' They said: 'Friends, it is not that we do not receive wages, but how can we do it if the military commander forbids us? You can till it instead.' Then, from the words of the Licchavis of Vaishali, they began to till all the fields of the military commander Siṃha, and at the right time the rain fell well, and a great abundance of crops grew. The military commander Siṃha became prosperous with wealth, and went to where the Blessed One was in Galava.

Then, the military commander Singh bowed his head to the feet of the Blessed One and sat down to one side. Having sat down to one side, the military commander Singh said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, formerly I had reduced my enjoyments, completely abandoned them, and completely exhausted them. Because the Sangha wished for benefit and wished for good, they granted me the precepts of training. Now, the Lichchavi assembly of Vaishali has accumulated enjoyments for me, and my enjoyments have increased. If the Blessed One, out of compassion, would break the precepts of training for me, that would be excellent." The Blessed One did not say anything to the military commander Singh, thus granting his request. Then, the military commander Singh, knowing that the Blessed One had granted his request by not speaking, bowed his head to the feet of the Blessed One and departed from the presence of the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One addressed the monks, saying: "Monks, the precepts of training should be broken for the military commander Singh and anyone else like him. There, the monks should also properly take up and abide in all the practices of conduct. This is how it should be done: After preparing the dwelling place, striking the gandi, and properly exhorting the monks with words of inquiry, when the entire Sangha has gathered and is in harmony, the military commander Singh or that benefactor should bow down, squat to the side of the elders, join his palms, and say these words: 'Venerable Sangha, please listen. I, the military commander Singh, am endowed with faith, good, and have a virtuous mind. There is nothing that I have not offered or completely given to the Buddha, the Dharma, the Sangha, or the agreeable monks. Because I have offered in this way and completely given in this way, my enjoyments have decreased and been completely exhausted. After being completely exhausted, the Sangha wished for benefit and wished for good, so they granted me the precepts of training. Now I, the military commander Singh, have increased enjoyments. I, the military commander Singh, request the granting of precepts, request the breaking of precepts. Compassionate venerable Sangha, out of compassion, please grant me the breaking of precepts.'
