Having eaten what has been given without preventing it, one should confess individually; the second has been explained. The basis for individually confessing the act of breaking the precepts and entering the lay life is as follows: The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was dwelling in Vaishali, in the lofty building with tiered rooms near the Monkey Tank. When General Lion did not see the truths in the presence of the Bhagavan, he seized upon one aspect and spoke such a grand lion's speech, and proclaimed a true lion's roar within the assembly: "From this day forward, the door is closed to the naked ascetics, the naked ascetic women, the naked ascetic hearers, and the naked ascetic hearer women. The door is opened to the Bhagavan's hearers, the monks, the nuns, the laymen, and the laywomen," and he declared that all agricultural lands were without fault. He was endowed with faith and had a good and virtuous mind. He did not fail to offer or give anything to the Buddha, the Dharma, the Sangha, or any agreeable monks. Because he offered and gave in this way, his wealth diminished, was exhausted, and eventually came to an end. At that time, the venerable Shariputra and the great Maudgalyayana were traveling and went to Vaishali. General Lion invited them both to his home as guests, and he himself went to the kitchen to prepare food for them. The naked ascetics saw this, and those who were knowledgeable said, "When General Lion had faith in us, everything was so perfect. Now that he has faith in the Shakya's son monks, he neither approaches us nor feeds us, but he himself does the household chores." They began to slander him. At that time, the monks reported this to the Bhagavan, and the Bhagavan said, "Monks, you should give the precepts of training based on the actions of General Lion and others like him, and the monks should properly take up and abide by all the practices of conduct there. This is how it should be done.

Having prepared the lodging, having struck the bell, and having properly exhorted the monks with words of inquiry, when all the Sangha have gathered and are in harmony, one monk should make a request. It should be done like this: having sat down, one should say these words: "Venerable Sangha, please listen. The general Siṃha is faithful and good, and has a virtuous intention. He has not offered or completely given anything to the Buddha, the Dharma, the Sangha, or any agreeable monks. He has offered and completely given in this way, reducing enjoyment through giving, until the very end. If the Sangha deems it timely and appropriate, may the Sangha grant it, and may the Sangha bestow the precepts of training upon the general Siṃha. This is the request." There, how the monks universally practice the Dharma is as follows: to whomever the Sangha has given the precepts of training, the monk should go to that house from time to time. He should enjoy the seat, teach the Dharma, not beg for alms, and not enter with an empty bowl. To the children begging there, he should not give the whole food, but should cut it into pieces and give it. He should take mustard and radish, etc., fruits and roots, and turnips, etc., vegetables obtained from the house. This is the ritual and activity of giving the precepts of training for a householder to a student. The monks, as the Blessed One said, having given him the precepts of training, the venerable Śāriputra and Maudgalyāyana, who had previously been invited as guests, did not go to his house. Then, the general Siṃha, having prepared food, the venerable Śāriputra and the great Maudgalyāyana went for well-being, and having arrived, bowed to their feet with their heads and said thus: "If the two noble ones would like to condescend, now is the time." The two said: "Householder, the precepts of training given to you by the Sangha are not permissible." He said: "Two noble ones, please allow me to invite the two venerable ones to go." The two said: "Householder, then go and report to the Blessed One."

The two of them reported the situation to the Blessed One in detail at that time, and the Blessed One said: "Let the guest who was invited before eat, and do not regret it." After the two of them were permitted by the Blessed One, they went to the house of the army commander Singha, and the six groups of monks saw them and asked: "Where are you two going?" "To the house of the army commander Singha." "Hasn't the Sangha given the training?" "It has been given, we two were invited before." The six groups of monks said: "If that is so, when the army commander Singha saw the truth in front of the Blessed One, we were invited the earliest." The two of them left without saying a word. They also followed closely behind, and the army commander Singha saw many monks coming and was very happy, and distributed the things needed by the family to the monks. After they ate and left, his children began to take food, and he said: "Children, distribute the things needed by the family to the monks, and wait for a while until the other food is not ready." Seeing them start to eat, some monks with few desires questioned: "Why do the monks, those who are in training, go to those families that are bound by the training of the Sangha without being invited, and take food with their own hands and eat, they condemn, ridicule, and insult." At that time, the monks reported this matter to the Blessed One. Then, because of this incident, this origin, and this situation, the Blessed One gathered the Sangha of monks, rebuked the six groups of monks, and condemned them in various ways, saying: "This is not the behavior of a renunciate, it is not in accordance, it is not appropriate, it is not in accordance with the rules, this is not something that a renunciate should do." The Blessed One fully saw the ten benefits of establishing the training, therefore my disciples who are hearers should recite the root of the training of discipline in this way: "The families of those in training, those who are bound by the training of the Sangha"
