The size of a monk's summer great cloth robe is nine cubits in length and three cubits and eighteen fingers in width. If any water field's width exceeds the size, or if it is allowed to exceed, it becomes the basis for a downfall resulting from the summer great cloth robe. There is no fault in using suitable material for the summer great cloth robe. The length of the summer great cloth robe is six spans of the Sugata. Each span of the Sugata has one and a half cubits of the proper size, so this is the length of the summer great cloth robe, which is nine cubits. The width is three and a half spans of the Sugata, which is three cubits and eighteen fingers of the proper size. There is no fault in exceeding any water field's width. There is no fault in doing or allowing to do. The agent here is one's own summer great cloth robe itself, and exceeding the size itself. With five limbs, this becomes a fundamental downfall: one's own self, the summer great cloth robe itself, exceeding the size itself, the suitability of the material itself, and being done by oneself or by someone commissioned. If those limbs are incomplete, there will be faults accordingly. The downfall of the preparatory act is a misdeed, that is, as long as the preparatory act of the downfall caused by the summer great cloth robe is undertaken, until the fundamental downfall is not reached, it is a misdeed. For each different preparatory act undertaken for the fundamental downfall, there is one misdeed. If the summer great cloth robe is made smaller than the size, it is a misdeed. Accepting the formation of a downfall without asking "Has it been cut?" is a misdeed. The downfall of the preparatory act of the preparatory act is a minor misdeed. As many preparatory acts as there are, there are that many preparatory acts of the preparatory act. The preparatory act of the misdeed of the preparatory act is also a misdeed, that is, a minor misdeed. There is no downfall when the material is not suitable. There is no downfall for the beginner, the insane, the mentally disturbed, or those oppressed by feelings. What should be learned is that a monk should learn not to rely on all forms of downfall caused by the summer great cloth robe in all places and at all times. For unsuitable material, the summer

One should not make clothes from large pieces of cloth. Whoever is sewing in front of you, you should ask him: Have you cut that thing? Without asking whether it has been cut, one should not accept the sewing. If one sews without cutting, then that transgression is not confessed, so one must confess again. Subsequent modifications are the same as before. The eighty-ninth transgression, which arises from making clothes from large pieces of summer cloth, has been explained. Regarding the origin of the transgression arising from the size of the Sugata's Dharma robe, there are two aspects due to the enactment and subsequent enactment. The origin of the enactment is that the Buddha Bhagavan was residing in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Garden. The venerable Nanda went to the tailor and, after chatting for a while, sat down and said: Good sir, can you sew a Dharma robe that fits the size of the Sugata's Dharma robe? He said: Venerable, what do you need a Dharma robe of the size of the Sugata's Dharma robe for? He said: Miser, what reward do you want here? If you want wages, then sew it. He thought: What he says is not wrong, what reward do I want here? I need wages to sew it, so he thought and said: Venerable, I will sew it. He gave him cloth and wages, and he sewed it for him. Nanda wore one part of it, and carried the rest on his shoulder, saying: Venerable. A monk saw it and said: Venerable, look at that rag, take a rest. Nanda said: Venerable, this is not a rag. What is it then? It is the Dharma robe of the Sugata. Venerable, are you allowed to wear the Dharma robe of the Sugata? It would be allowed if I stepped on the necks of enemies. Does the Venerable also have enemies? Yes, first of all, you are my foremost enemy. Therefore, I cannot bear to wear the Dharma robe of the Sugata, he said. Then, those monks with few desires scolded, saying: Why do monks wear Dharma robes that fit the size of the Sugata's Dharma robe? They criticized and spoke harshly. At that time, the monks reported to the Blessed One. Then, regarding this event, this origin, this situation, the Blessed One convened the Sangha of monks.
