One should not fall into danger due to quarrels and feelings. What should be learned is that a bhikkhu should not rely on wearing cotton in all places and at all times, and should learn in this way. Whoever sews in front should ask him, 'Have you collected the items?' One should not accept sewing without asking whether they have been collected. If one sews without collecting, it is not an easily confessed offense, and one should confess again. Subsequent repairs are the same as before. The offense of wearing cotton, the eighty-sixth, has been explained. The origin of the offense arising from a seat is twofold: establishment and permission. The origin of the establishment is that the Buddha, the Bhagavan, was dwelling in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Garden. The Bhagavan declared, 'Bhikkhus should be allowed to make seats.' The bhikkhus made them excessively, so that the bhikkhus with few desires rebuked them, saying, 'The Bhagavan declared that bhikkhus should be allowed to make seats, why do the bhikkhus make them excessively?' They rebuked, pointed fingers, and spoke harshly. At that time, the bhikkhus reported to the Bhagavan. Then, the Bhagavan, because of this event, this origin, and this occasion, assembled the bhikkhu sangha and rebuked the bhikkhus, saying, 'You are greedy, insatiable, difficult to nourish, and difficult to satisfy!' And he praised those who are content, know satisfaction, are easy to nourish, easy to satisfy, simple, reduce possessions, practice virtues, are beautiful, and have a sense of shame. Furthermore, because the Tathagata fully knows the ten benefits of establishing the precepts, my shravaka disciples should recite this foundation of training in accordance with discipline as follows: 'If a bhikkhu is allowed to make a seat, he should be allowed to make it very moderately.' The measure of the seat is as follows: the length is the height of the Sugata's cubit, and the width is half the height of the cubit. If one allows it to be made larger than this, it should be cut off, otherwise it is an offense to be confessed.' Thus it was established. The place was Shravasti, and the individuals were many bhikkhus.

Many! Afflictions are immeasurable, and faults are allowing the cushion to exceed the limit. The occasion for permission is that the Buddha Bhagavan was dwelling in Sravasti, in Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's Garden. The venerable Asvajit exceeded the limit, and because his cushion was not enough, he placed a pile of leaves at the edge of his feet to protect his dwelling. The nature of the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, who live and dwell and exist, is that they always go to the hells of beings, animals, hungry ghosts, gods, places, cold water, mountains, cemeteries, and temples, out of compassion for those who have been tamed. Therefore, the Buddha Bhagavan wanted to go to the temple, so the Bhagavan went to the comfortable place of the venerable Asvajit's temple. The Bhagavan saw that the venerable Asvajit had placed a pile of leaves at the edge of his feet. Having seen this, he said to the venerable Ananda: Ananda, whose bed is this? Venerable, it is the bed of the venerable Asvajit. Then why did he put a pile of leaves at the edge of his feet? Venerable, the Bhagavan allows monks to make cushions, and they should be made according to the size. The size of the cushion is: the length is the height of the Sugata's cubit, and the width is half a cubit. If it exceeds this size, it should be cut off, and it is a downfall. Therefore, the hearers in the Vinaya established such a training, and the venerable Asvajit exceeded the limit, because his cushion was not enough, so he put a pile of leaves at the edge of his feet to protect his dwelling. Ananda, therefore, measure the length with the height of a cubit. Then the Bhagavan praised those who wanted to learn, respected learning, and reduced the use of learning materials, and spoke to the monks teachings that were in accordance with this, mostly, and in accordance with it. He said to the monks: Monks, therefore
