A very old monk came and said, "Whose is this, O venerable one?" Nanda said, "It is my silk-cotton." Then a monk who was there said, "What Nanda says is true; the silk-cotton is Nanda's. Just so, the couch is the Sangha's." When he had said this, Nanda took the silk-cotton and spread a little of the silk-cotton on the couch and placed it there. That monk, without examining it separately, lay down there, and when night had passed and he had risen, all his robes had become grey with silk-cotton, and the monks said to him, "Did you lie down on a battlefield?" When he had told how it had happened, the monks of little desire rebuked, saying, "Why do monks spread silk-cotton on the Sangha's couch or cot?" They reproached, they reviled, they denounced. At that time the monks informed the Blessed One. Then the Blessed One, on account of this occurrence, this starting-point, this occasion, convened the Sangha of monks, and rebuked Nanda, saying, "This is not the conduct of a recluse, it is not conforming, it is not allowable, it is not in accordance with the rule; this is not a deed to be done by those who have gone forth." In many ways he rebuked him, and having seen the ten advantages in laying down a training, he said, 'This ground for training should be recited by my disciples who desire to be trained in the discipline: "If any monk should spread or cause to be spread silk-cotton on a couch or cot belonging to the Sangha, it is to be confessed."' Thus he laid down the rule. The place was Sravasti. The person was Nanda. The defilement was slight. The offense was spreading silk-cotton on the Sangha's dwelling place. Therein, 'any monk' means Nanda, son of the Sakyas, or any other who is like him. 'Of the Sangha' means of the Sangha of disciples of the Tathagata. 'Couch' means the couch itself. 'Cot' also means the cot itself. 'Silk-cotton' means any of the five kinds of silk-cotton: salmali, arka, kasha, srava, and eraka silk-cotton. 'Spreads' means by himself. 'Causes to be spread' means by another. 'To be confessed' means having collected those things, it is to be confessed.

That downfall should be confessed. The term "downfall" is the same as before. So, how does one incur a downfall? Here, one should understand the characteristics of this through the establishment of downfalls by way of the actual basis, the preparation, and the preparation of the preparation, as well as the absence of downfall, what should be learned, and remedies. Here, the establishment of the actual basis downfall is that for a monastic, the five kinds of tree cotton that cause discomfort to clothing and the body on the seats or small seats of the sangha. Whether it is silk-cotton tree, arka, kasha, silk-cotton, or araka tree cotton, whichever one, whether one spreads it oneself or has someone else spread it, if one makes clothing with tree cotton, it becomes the actual basis for a downfall. There is no fault for the seats or small seats of the sangha, or any dwelling place. There is no fault for any of the five kinds of tree cotton. There is no fault for how much they cause discomfort to clothing and the body. There is no fault for spreading it oneself or having someone else spread it. The agent of this is the seat or small seat of the sangha, or any dwelling place, and any tree cotton that causes discomfort to the body and clothing. For this, one incurs a downfall of the actual basis with five limbs: any suitable dwelling place of the sangha, any tree cotton, causing discomfort to the body and clothing, the intention of theft, and spreading it oneself or having someone else spread it. If those limbs are not complete, there is no fault accordingly. The downfall of preparation is a misdeed: as long as one starts to engage in the preparation for a downfall of making clothing with tree cotton, until one does not reach the actual basis, it is a misdeed. For each different preparation one engages in for the actual basis, there is a misdeed. It is a misdeed for a person. It is a misdeed for not harming the body and clothing. It is a misdeed if one accepts the formation of a downfall without asking "Is it enough?" The downfall of the preparation of the preparation is a minor misdeed: as many preparations as there are, there are that many preparations of the preparation. The preparation of the misdeed of the preparation is also a misdeed, that is, a minor misdeed. The absence of downfall is when there is no harm to the body and clothing, and there is no downfall when there is no intention of theft. The first worker, the insane,
