Whoever it may be, there is no mitigation of offense for going to more than three houses for alms in the afternoon. There is no mitigation of offense for going to more than two houses for alms in the morning. The agent here is going to three houses etc. in the morning, and not informing the householder who is staying, and not having the act of requesting occur. In the afternoon, it is going to four houses etc., and not having the act of requesting occur. The branches here are that in the morning, five things cause a fundamental offense: the morning itself, and inviting the Sangha with that phrase, and not informing the patron, saying, "Do not hinder the distribution because of my future (distribution)," and not having the act of requesting occur, and showing (oneself) at three houses etc. In the afternoon, three branches cause a fundamental offense: the afternoon itself, and not having the act of requesting occur, and going to four houses etc. If these (conditions) are not complete, there is mitigation of offense as appropriate. The preparatory offense is an evil deed: as long as one begins the preparatory act of committing the offense of wandering in villages for alms, until one does not reach the fundamental offense, it is an evil deed. For each different preparatory act that is begun for the fundamental offense, there is one evil deed each time. The offense of the preparation of the preparation is a minor evil deed: as many preparatory acts as there are, there are that many preparations of the preparation. The preparation of the evil deed of preparation is also an evil deed, that is, a minor evil deed. There is no offense if the act of requesting has not occurred. If one is not invited as a guest for that purpose, there is no offense. There is no offense for a beginner, and for one who is insane, and for one who is mentally disturbed, and for one who is afflicted by feelings. What should be learned is that a bhikshu should learn not to rely in any way on actions that lead to the offense of wandering in villages in all places and at all times. If a request occurs that obstructs the practice of Dharma and life etc., one should go. The householder who is staying should be informed. The remedy is the same as before. The eighty-first offense of wandering in villages has been explained. The basis for the offense of going to the king's palace at night is twofold, due to establishment and permission. The basis for establishment is the Blessed One Buddha.

At one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove, at Anathapindika's monastery. Then, the Blessed One said to the venerable Maha Maudgalyayana: After subduing the dragon kings Nanda and Upananda, King Pasenadi of Kosala, relying on that, offered the Blessed One and the community of monks umbrella-food for seven days in the royal palace. At that time, the householder Evil-born Good-giver, the householder Harmony-maker, the householder Precept-merchant, and Prince Black-face in Shravasti requested the Blessed One for the Dharma Abhidhamma and the Vinaya Abhidhamma. The Blessed One also taught them gradually. King Pasenadi of Kosala also sat watching them. After listening to the Dharma-related talk for a moment, he bowed his head to the Blessed One's feet, rose from his seat, and left, entering the residence of the consorts, and said to the consort Flower-garland Mother: Flower-garland Mother, today the householder Evil-born Good-giver, the householder Harmony-maker, the householder Precept-merchant, and Prince Black-face requested the Blessed One for the Dharma Abhidhamma and the Vinaya Abhidhamma. The Blessed One also taught them gradually, and I also sat watching them silently, and then rose and left. Flower-garland Mother said: Lord, why didn't you ask the Blessed One? Flower-garland Mother, I have heard little, and they have heard much, so what could I ask? Lord, why don't you recite the Buddha's teachings? Flower-garland Mother, I am always busy with the affairs and actions of the king, how can I recite? If someone recites the Buddha's teachings for you, I will ask you at night. Lord, so be it. The king chose the venerable Shariputra as the teacher of the royal consort Summer-cloth, and the venerable Ananda as the teacher of the consort Flower-garland Mother. When they had those people recite, the venerable Shariputra was one who knew the time and recognized the time, so he went to the royal family at the right time.
