Then the Blessed One said to the Venerable Ananda: Ananda, go and instruct that householder to do as he pleases. The Venerable Ananda instructed the householder to do as he pleases. The householder said: Venerable, I do not know what your pleasure and auspiciousness are. Thus, I have only prepared seats for you, please be seated. The Venerable Ananda reported to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said: If he says that, it should be said that he has done as he pleases by preparing seats only for you. One should sit down and not regret this. When the Sangha of monks, including the Buddha, were seated, when the time of the midday meal was near, the Blessed One said to the Venerable Ananda: Serve food to that householder, for it is time for the midday meal. Tell him, what can this food that is about to rot do for you? The Venerable Ananda instructed the householder, and the householder said: Venerable, please wait a moment until the relatives arrive. The Venerable Ananda reported this matter to the Blessed One, and after the Blessed One waited for a moment, he again said to the Venerable Ananda: Serve food to that householder, for it is time for the midday meal. Tell him, what can this food that is about to rot do for you? The Venerable Ananda instructed the householder, and the householder said: Venerable, please wait a moment until the relatives arrive. The Venerable Ananda reported this matter to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said to the Venerable Ananda: If that relative does not come, will he not give food? That householder said: Venerable, I will not offer it. The Venerable Ananda reported this matter to the Blessed One, and then the Blessed One at that time spoke the verses: All dependence on others is suffering, All self-reliance is happiness, Common things are harmful, Relationships are very difficult to overcome. When the end of the midday meal arrived, the relative came and said: Householder, why are you waiting without distributing food? He said: Venerable, you...

Now (he) said, "I will not distribute for a while until the future." Did he say this? If Nanda was not argumentative, he would just stay silent. Then, that householder began to distribute, and after a while, when the time for distributing food had passed, some monks stopped distributing after receiving food. Other monks stopped distributing only because they had not received food. The Blessed One spoke of the merits and then departed. Nanda, feeling ashamed, stayed there alone. That day, during the Sangha's recitation of precepts, an elder Vinaya master stood aside, admonishing and saying to the monks, "Venerable ones, has Nanda come? Has anyone invited him?" The monks said, "He has not come, and no one has invited him." Other monks said, "Venerable ones, Nanda quarreled with us in the morning for worldly matters, but now he quarrels for the Dharma." They rebuked those monks who were content with little, saying, "Why do the monks wander in various houses morning and evening after being invited to the house where food is distributed?" They blamed, reviled, and slandered. At that time, the monks reported this matter to the Blessed One. Then, because of this event, this origin, this cause, the Blessed One gathered the Sangha of monks and rebuked Nanda, saying, "This is not the conduct of a Shramana, it is not in accordance (with the Dharma), it is not lawful, it is not in accordance with the rules, this is not something a renunciate should do." After rebuking in various ways, the Blessed One saw the ten benefits of establishing precepts, and therefore said, "My Shravaka disciples should recite and study the basis of the precepts in this way: If any monk, having been invited to a house with food, habitually wanders in various houses morning and evening, he commits a Patayantika offense." The Blessed One established this precept. The place was Shravasti. The person was Nanda. The affliction is acting according to one's own habits. The offense is being invited to a house with food, wandering in various houses in the morning, disrupting the Sangha's worldly affairs; and wandering in various houses in the evening, disrupting the Sangha's Dharma affairs. The origin of establishing this precept is the Buddha, the Blessed One, in Shravasti.
