Thinking that it was not permissible to travel together, he returned and went to Jetavana, where he told the monks about it in detail, and scolded, 'Why do these monks of few desires embrace and board a boat together with a fellow nun?' They accused, reviled, and slandered. At that time, the monks reported to the Blessed One. Then, because of this event, this origin, and this occasion, the Blessed One convened the monastic community of monks and rebuked the group of six: 'Your behavior is not like a śrāmaṇa, not in accordance, not lawful, not in accordance with the rules, this is not something that a renunciant should do.' He condemned them in various ways. The Blessed One fully observed the ten benefits of establishing precepts, therefore my śrāvaka disciples should recite and study the basis of discipline as follows: 'If any monk, embracing a fellow nun, boards the same boat and drifts upstream or downstream, he commits an offense.' This precept was established. The place was Śrāvastī, the persons were the group of six, the afflictions were desire and hatred, the offense was embracing a fellow nun and boarding the same boat. The origin of the permission is that the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling in Śrāvastī, in Jetavana, in the grove of Anāthapiṇḍada. At that time, a householder allowed the construction of a monastery for the sangha outside the Tāvakā monastery near the Ganges River. To celebrate the completion of the monastery, he invited both sides of the sangha. A nun who was diligent in virtuous practices thought, 'Today I do not need to go begging for alms, so I will strive for virtue until the shadow of the umbrella reaches, and then I will check the time and go.' So, she strived for virtue until the shadow of the umbrella reached, and then she checked the time and went to the riverbank. When the monks boarded the boat, the boatman said, 'Venerable nun, please board the boat!' That nun...

Said, "Let the beautiful face increase, and I will go when the other boats are full." The boatman came again and again and said, "Holy mother, please get on the boat!" She also said, "Let the beautiful face increase, and I will go when the other boats are full." After the boatman left, he tied the boat to a stake on the other side of the river, entered the assembly of many ordinary people, and sat down. The bhikkhuni called again and again, but the boatman did not give a word, and she waited there in vain. When the sun was setting, she returned to the summer house under the umbrella. She devoted herself to virtuous deeds as long as the radiance had not faded from her body. When the radiance faded from her body, she collapsed and slept. The bhikkhunis came to her and said, "Holy mother, do you think the food is someone else's, or do you think the meal is someone else's? Why did you collapse and sleep? Did you eat something?" "Who ate?" "You ate." "I didn't eat." "Then why did you collapse and sleep?" She told the bhikkhunis in detail about the situation at that time, and the bhikkhunis told the bhikkus in detail. The bhikkus reported to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One instructed, "Bhikkus, therefore, except for going directly to the other shore." Then, the Blessed One praised the desire to learn, respect for learning, and the efforts made for learning, and spoke to the bhikkus the Dharma that was consistent with, related to, and in accordance with this, and then instructed the bhikkus, "Bhikkus, therefore, what was previously prohibited was the five things, and this is the permission. My Shravaka disciples should recite the basis of learning in the Vinaya in this way: If any bhikku embraces a like-minded bhikkhuni and boards the same boat, going upstream or downstream, unless it is to go directly to the other shore, he commits a fall." This was permitted by the Blessed One. The place is Shravasti. The people are the bhikkus and bhikkhunis who believe in this Dharma. There are no afflictions or faults. Among them, "any bhikku" refers to the group of six bhikkus, or others like that. "Together with a like-minded bhikkhuni" refers to
