The Extensive Commentary on the Pratimoksha Sutra, Collected from the Vinaya, The Immaculate Friend. The Extensive Commentary on the Pratimoksha Sutra, Collected from the Vinaya, The Immaculate Friend. The basis for the Nissaggiya Pacittiya concerning taking away is: The Buddha Bhagavan was dwelling in Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's Park in Sravasti. There was a monk named Dharma, who lived with Ananda, who was conscientious, remorseful, disciplined, and desirous of learning. As long as he did not know that Ananda was engaging in all kinds of misconduct, he lived with him. When he knew that Ananda was engaging in all kinds of misconduct, he began to live with the monks who were naturally abiding, and only went to pay homage to the feet (of the Buddha) in the three times according to the Bhagavan's teachings. Then, the Bhagavan said to the venerable Ananda: Ananda, go and tell the monks that the Tathagata is going on a pilgrimage to Kosala, whoever among you is willing to go on a pilgrimage to Kosala with the Tathagata, do the work of the monastic robe, and then closed the door. The venerable Ananda, having heard Ananda proclaim this to the monks, said to Nanda: If we stay here, we will miss a hundred opportunities, and we must complete the southern affairs in any case. If we go with the middle group of the Bhagavan, it is said that there are eighteen benefits to the Buddha's departure, and hundreds of thousands of beings will also go, so we will have to drink turbid water for a while, and we will not be able to get a place under the trees. If we lead some wise monks and find opportunities from the nostrils, who will be happy? Nanda said: Entice the monk Dharma, who lives with you, with wealth and take him away. Then, when the monk Dharma came to Ananda to sew the monastic robe, Ananda said: I will give you a monastic robe, you don't need to sew it yourself. Then, Dharma put on the monastic robe given by Ananda, and himself...

Having offered a large cloth to the Sangha, he also gave an old patched robe to a beggar. Then, the Joyful One said to Dharma, "You should go ahead like me." But Dharma could not do it, so the Joyful One took back the patched robe he had given. Then, a monk without a Dharma robe went to the Blessed One's middle dwelling for alms, and the Blessed One saw him and said to the Venerable Ananda. The Venerable Ananda told the Blessed One the story in detail. Then, the Blessed One, regarding this event, this origin, and this occasion, convened the Sangha of monks and rebuked the Joyful One in various ways. Having truly seen the ten benefits of establishing the precepts, he said, "My disciples should recite the basis for learning discipline in this way: If any monk gives a robe to a monk and afterwards becomes angry, quarrelsome, and arrogant, and being displeased, takes it back himself or causes another to take it back, and says to the monk, 'I will not give you the robe, give it back!' then that monk should return the remainder, and if he does not return it, he commits an offense entailing forfeiture." Thus the precept was established. The place was Shravasti, the person was the Joyful One, the affliction was intolerance, and the offense was taking back what was given. Among them, "any monk" refers to the Joyful One, son of the Shakyas, or anyone else like him. "To a monk" refers to a follower of this Dharma. "Robe" refers to any of the seven types of robes: woolen cloth, Shana cloth, Zarma cloth, Dukula cloth, cotton-wool cloth, Kotamba cloth, and Niyoka cloth. "Having given" means that it does not need to be returned. "Afterwards" means at another time. "Becoming angry, quarrelsome, and arrogant, and being displeased" means that the anger has not subsided. "Takes it back" means himself. "Causes another to take it back" means another. "Saying to the monk: I will not give you the robe, give it back!" means saying those words with the intention of taking it back. "That monk" refers to any monk. "The remainder" refers to whatever remains of it.
