Saying, "Let's go," they entered the nuns' summer residence. They had twelve nuns prepare provisions for the road and took them along. They also took a mendicant monk and set out on a journey. When they had gone beyond the boundary, they said, "Gawa, Nyegawa, how long have we lived by the conduct of others? Come, let us live by our own conduct." First, Gawa sat down, then Gam sat down. Then, the one who lived with Gawa sat down. Then, the one who lived with Gam sat down. Then, Gawa's novice sat down. Then, Gam's novice nun sat down. Similarly, Nyegawa and Tsug Gam and others were arranged alternately and they went. That companion and a Brahmin were walking together, and he saw them and said, "This is a renunciate. This is his wife. This is his son. This is his daughter-in-law. This is his grandson. This is his grandson's wife." Nyeda heard this and said, "Miser, I will press your neck with my foot, that's how it is!" The mendicant monk thought, "I am dead, it is not right to go on a journey with these people who engage in all kinds of bad conduct." So he turned back and went to Jeta Grove, where he told the monks in detail about the matter. Those monks with few desires rebuked, saying, "Why do the monks embrace the nuns' companions and sit by the roadside?" They condemned, criticized, and mocked. At that time, the monks reported this to the Blessed One. Then, because of this event, this cause, this occasion, the Blessed One convened the monastic community of monks, rebuked the group of six, and in many ways condemned them, saying, "This is not the conduct of a monk, it is not in accordance, it is not appropriate, it is not in accordance with the Dharma, it is not something to be done by one who has gone forth." He saw the ten benefits of establishing precepts, and therefore said, "My hearers should recite and learn the basis of the discipline in this way: If any monk..."
