If a bhikṣu, for the sake of a small amount of food, not for the sake of teaching, says to a bhikṣuṇī, "This bhikṣu teaches the bhikṣuṇī for the sake of a small amount of food," whether speaking to himself or to another, then teaching for the sake of a small amount of food becomes the basis for a transgression. If it is not for the sake of teaching for a small amount of food, there is no fault. There is no fault in speaking to the bhikṣu himself or to another. There is no fault if the other person understands the meaning. There is no fault in helping with the five kinds of food, the five kinds of drink, or any of the bhikṣu's necessities of life. The agent here is the bhikṣu who teaches the bhikṣuṇī, not for the sake of a small amount of food. Here, the five limbs become the basis for a fundamental transgression: the bhikṣu who teaches the bhikṣuṇī, not for the sake of a small amount of food, and saying, "This bhikṣu teaches the bhikṣuṇī for the sake of a small amount of food," helping, speaking to himself or to another, and the other person understanding the meaning. If these limbs are not complete, there is a fault accordingly. The transgression of action is a misdeed. As long as the action of transgression of teaching for the sake of a small amount of food is started, until the fundamental is reached, it is a misdeed. For each different action performed on the fundamental, there is a separate misdeed. If the bhikṣu who teaches the bhikṣuṇī has attachment to the bhikṣuṇī, or falls away, there is a misdeed. If the bhikṣu who teaches the bhikṣuṇī has attachment to the bhikṣuṇī, or falls away, there is a near misdeed. If the other person does not understand the meaning, there is a misdeed. The transgression of the action of action is a minor misdeed. As many actions as there are, there are as many actions of action. The action of the misdeed of action is also a misdeed, that is, a minor misdeed. There is no transgression if it is true that the bhikṣu teaches the bhikṣuṇī for the sake of a small amount of food. There is no transgression for a beginner, a madman, a disturbed mind, or one who is afflicted by feelings. What is to be learned is that a bhikṣu should learn not to rely on any kind of behavior that would lead to a transgression of teaching for the sake of a small amount of food in all places and at all times. In order to make the bhikṣuṇī fearless in asking about the Dharma, food should be offered to the bhikṣu.

Whips, brushes, sticks, and small brushes should also be given. Monks should also accept those. The modification is as before. The downfall proclaimed for a small amount of food, that twenty-third has been explained. The basis for the downfall of giving clothes is that the Buddha, the Bhagavan, was residing in Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Garden in Shravasti. In Shravasti, there lived a merchant who took a wife from the same caste, and together they played and rejoiced, enjoying happiness. When he grew old, his relatives passed away, and his wealth and enjoyment were exhausted. He said to his wife: "Good woman, I am now unable to accumulate wealth, I will go forth into homelessness." The wife said: "Prince's son, I will also go forth." He entrusted this wife to the great Pajapati Gotami, and she was ordained and fully ordained. He himself went to Jeta Grove, requested the monastic community of monks to ordain him and grant him full ordination. In Shravasti, he was famous and had great merit, so everyone heard that the merchant of Shravasti had gone forth. They offered him Dharma robes, alms, lodging, causes of illness, and medicinal supplies, and he was satisfied with them. On another occasion, he wore a reddish-yellow patchwork robe and went to the summer retreat of the bhikkhuni. The bhikkhuni bowed her head at his feet, sat before him, and repeatedly looked at his patchwork robe. The monk said: "Sister, do you want this patchwork robe?" She said: "Like the leftovers of the heavenly realm." He thought: "I should give this patchwork robe to her, and I should sew another patchwork robe." Thinking this, he gave her the patchwork robe and left. Then, the Bhagavan, together with the community of monks, went on a pilgrimage to Kosala, and saw that monk without a patchwork robe, only wearing upper and lower garments, going on a pilgrimage. He said to the venerable Ananda, and the venerable Ananda explained in detail how it happened.
