Which should be worshiped, remembered, and manifested by the gods. When the venerable Mahapanthaka went forth, the possessions of Chulapanthaka dwindled, were completely exhausted, and completely cut off. Therefore, he began to maintain his livelihood with great difficulty. Then, the venerable Mahapanthaka thought to himself: "What I should attain, I should attain. I should go to Shravasti and attend upon the Blessed One." Then, the venerable Mahapanthaka, with five hundred attendants, while traveling in the country of Kosala, went to Shravasti. When a large crowd of people in Shravasti heard of this, hundreds and thousands of beings went there. Chulapanthaka saw this and went there as well. Mahapanthaka saw him and said, and he also requested to go forth. The venerable Mahapanthaka looked to see if he had the essence of virtuous roots, and saw that he did. Thinking, "Who does he depend on?" he saw that he depended on himself, and then said: "Traveler, in this teaching of the Sage, it is not lineage that is valued, not family that is valued, not learning that is valued, but practice that is valued. If you wish, go forth!" "Venerable one, I wish to go forth!" The venerable Mahapanthaka caused Chulapanthaka to go forth and receive full ordination. Then, he began to have him recite: "Do not commit evil with body, speech, or mind, be without avarice, a protector to all the world. With mindfulness and awareness, do not associate with contaminated vessels, which are the origin of suffering." Even after three months, he had not mastered this verse. But cowherds and shepherds heard it and mastered it. He, with his servants, respectfully went to them and asked them, and they taught it to him. When the Blessed One and the great assembly of Shravakas were gathered, those who had vowed to spend the rainy season in the countryside, dwelling with and near the venerable Mahapanthaka, after those three summer months had passed, wearing their robes, holding their bowls and robes, the venerable Maha-

Having gone to that solitary place, the venerable Lama prostrated at the feet of the great path and sat down on one side. Having sat down on one side, some of them would tell how they had attained realization. Some would seek recitations of the Sutras, the Vinaya, and the Abhidharma, as well as various questions. Then, that utterly foolish, utterly insignificant one relied on the group of six. He attended to them. He revered them. The venerable Lama also relied on the group of six. He attended to them. He revered them. Then, some of them said to him: Lama, these same teachers of yours also seek recitations and questions from the teacher, so you should also go and seek recitations and questions from the teacher. Didn't the Blessed One also say that one should not read meaningless questions? Be quiet for a moment and seek why the verses cannot be recited. Lama went and said: Teacher, please grant me some recitations for a moment. The venerable Lama Mahā, knowing that he was disparaging the Sangha, grabbed him by the neck, expelled him outside the Jeta Grove, and said: You utterly foolish, utterly insignificant one, since you have renounced in the Blessed One's teachings, what do you want to do, just stay here. Lama thought, here I am neither a śrāmaṇa nor a Brahmin, so he began to cry. The Blessed One saw this, rebuked him, and spoke the verse: What is the praise of a child, and what is the rebuke of a wise man? This is the best rebuke of a wise man, not the praise of a child. Then, the Blessed One said: Lama, can you recite from the Tathagata? He replied: Venerable one, I am utterly foolish, utterly insignificant. Then, the Blessed One spoke the verse regarding this event: Whoever recognizes a child as a child, therefore that one is wise. A child who thinks he is wise, that one is utterly foolish here. It is not appropriate for the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, to teach the Dharma word by word, because that...

There is no place for it. Then, the Blessed One said to the Venerable Ananda: Ananda, let the traveler recite! The Venerable Ananda began to have the traveler recite, but he could not recite. Ananda reported: Venerable, I still need to attend to the Teacher, and I also need to uphold the teachings I have heard. I also need to have the Sangha recite. I also need to teach the Dharma to the Brahmins and householders who come. Therefore, I am not able to have the traveler recite. The Blessed One said to him the two words, "Abandon dust, abandon defilement," but he did not grasp these two words. The Blessed One thought, "I should purify this person's karma," and then said: Traveler, wipe the monks' shoes and shoes with buckles! He also told the monks: Monks, let the monk traveler wipe your shoes and shoes with buckles, and also teach him the recitation of these two words! When the traveler was wiping the monks' shoes and shoes with buckles, the monks also taught him the two recitations, "Abandon dust, abandon defilement," but after some time, the traveler forgot these two recitations again. Then, the Venerable Traveler, at dawn, thought to himself: What the Blessed One said, "Abandon dust, abandon defilement," did the Blessed One mean the dust of the mind, or did he mean the dust outside? As he was thinking this, at that time, these three verses, which he had never heard before, appeared in his mind: This dust is desire, it is not earth dust, dust is the name of desire, it is not the name of dust, whoever, the wise, completely abandons this dust, they, in the Sugata's teaching, become mindful. This dust is hatred, it is not earth dust, dust is the name of hatred, it is not the name of dust, whoever, the wise, completely abandons this dust, they, with the Sugata's teaching, become mindful. This dust is ignorance, it is not earth dust, dust is the name of ignorance, it is not the name of dust, whoever, the wise, completely aban
