Having displeased her by touching her. Even if he displeases her, he can make amends for the offense according to the Dharma. Or, the subsequent teacher of the nuns is, O sisters, is your community of nuns complete or completely pure? Are you in harmony? Is there no fault? You do not allow someone who has not been appointed by the Sangha to teach, do you? The person who teaches you comes from the Sangha. You also do not allow any monks to teach. Your instructions and subsequent guidance are from the Sangha. Being able to teach the sisters to be mindful. In this way, one should make her happy and appoint her with a request and two actions. The Blessed One said this. However, the group of six monks, without being appointed, teach the nuns. The monks were displeased and scolded, "Why do the monks teach the nuns without being appointed?" They accused, ridiculed, and insulted. At that time, the monks reported this matter to the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One, in response to this matter, this origin, and this situation, convened the Sangha of monks, and rebuked the group of six monks: "This is not the behavior of a renunciate, it is not in accordance, it is not appropriate, it is not in accordance with the Dharma, this is not something that a renunciate should do." He rebuked them in various ways. He fully saw the ten benefits of establishing the precepts, therefore my disciples should recite the basis of this discipline as follows: "If any monk, without being appointed by the Sangha, teaches a nun, he commits a downfall." Establishing (the precept). The place is Śrāvastī (present-day Sahet-Mahet, Uttar Pradesh, India). The people are the group of six monks. The affliction is desire. The offense is teaching a nun without being appointed. The origin of the permission is that the Buddha, the Blessed One, was residing in Śrāvastī, in the Jeta Grove, in the Garden of Anāthapiṇḍada. In Śrāvastī there lived a Brahmin who did not take a wife from the same caste, but played with her, rejoiced with her, and enjoyed himself with her. All of his sons died. At another time, his wife conceived.

The Brahmin, with his hand on his cheek, was lost in thought. Not far from him, there was an old woman who saw him and said: Brahmin, why do you sit with your hand on your cheek, lost in thought? The Brahmin said: All my sons have died. Moreover, my wife has become pregnant, and if the other son she will bear also dies, I will go away uttering great lamentations. The old woman said: When your wife is about to give birth, call me. Then, after some time, when the time for his wife to give birth arrived, the Brahmin called the old woman, and she came. As soon as his wife gave birth and a boy was born from her, the old woman bathed the boy, wrapped him in white cloth, filled his mouth with ghee, and gave him to a girl, and she said to the girl: Girl, take this boy to the crossroads of the main road, and if any bhikshu or Brahmin appears, prostrate to them with reverence and respect. Say to them: This boy prostrates to the feet of the noble ones. If he is alive when the sun sets, bring him back. If he dies, bury him there. The girl was capable of carrying out this task, so she took the boy and went to the crossroads of the main road and sat there. The practice of the non-Buddhists is to rise early in the morning and go to the water's edge for ablutions, so the non-Buddhists went to the water's edge for ablutions, and when they arrived there, the girl prostrated to them with offerings, reverence, and respect, and said: Noble ones, this boy prostrates to the feet of the noble ones. They said: May you live long! May you be nurtured for a long time! May the wishes of both your parents be completely fulfilled! The bhikshu sthaviras also, early in the morning, having put on their robes, and carrying their alms bowls and dharma robes, went to Shravasti for alms. The girl also prostrated to the feet of the sthaviras with reverence and respect, and said: Noble ones, this boy prostrates to the feet of the noble ones.

I prostrate to the feet. The elders said: May you live long! May you prosper long! May the wishes of your parents be completely fulfilled! That girl took that boy to the road of Jeta Grove. The Blessed One, in the morning, put on his robes, took his bowl and Dharma garments, and went to Shravasti for alms. The Blessed One said: May you live long! May you prosper long! May the wishes of your parents, which are in accordance with Dharma, be completely fulfilled! That girl, seeing that he was still alive when she looked at the setting sun, took that boy and came home. They asked that girl: Is the child alive? The girl said: He is alive. They said: Where did you pick him up? On such and such a great road. They said: What should this child be named? Because this child was picked up on the great road, this child was named Great Road.
