The root of things like a bed suitable for pressing is also the same. A bhikkhu should also understand it in this way, and there is no fault in being hesitant. There is no fault in pressing down on it with weight. The doer of this is the roof itself of the sangha monastery, and the one who mainly focuses on pressing down on the things that appear as the root of things like a bed suitable for pressing. In this regard, the fundamental transgression is constituted by five limbs: it is not the roof itself above the sangha monastery, nor the tile itself, nor is it covered with something similar; the things that appear as the root of things like a bed suitable for pressing are raised up; it is not that a footstool is placed; understanding there; pressing down with weight; pressing. If these limbs are not complete, then there is a fault as appropriate. The transgression of action is an offense: as long as the action of sitting on the root of the transgression is started, until the fundamental is not touched, it is an offense. For the fundamental, for each different action started, there is a separate offense. For the personal monastery, it is an offense. For the monastery of the bhikkhuni sangha, the heretics, and the dwelling of householders, it is an offense. For what is not a sangha monastery, and for what is not the appearance of a root suitable for pressing, but is thought to be, and being hesitant, is an offense. Not pressing down on the ground with weight, just sitting, is an offense. The transgression of the action of action is a minor offense: for as many actions as there are, there are that many actions of action. The action of the offense of action is also an offense: it is a minor offense. There is no transgression in the case of: the roof itself of the sangha monastery, the tile itself, and being covered with something similar, there is no transgression. The things that do not appear as a root suitable for pressing, raising up, and placing a footstool, there is no transgression. Not understanding there, there is no transgression. For the beginner, the insane, the mentally disturbed, and those oppressed by feelings, there is no transgression. What should be learned is that a bhikkhu should avoid the transgression of sitting on the root in all places and in all circumstances.

One should be taught not to rely on any kind of change. One should sit consciously on a bed, etc. Rectification afterwards is the same as before. The eighteenth downfall, concerning dwelling at the root of a tree, has been explained. The basis for the downfall of using things with living beings is as follows: The Buddha Bhagavan was dwelling in the Ghosita Garden in कौशाम्बी (Kauśāmbī, a city in ancient India). At that time, the venerable Udayin knowingly watered grass, dung, and land with water containing living beings. The other monks said to him: Venerable Udayin, you should not knowingly water grass, dung, and land with water containing living beings, nor should you have others water it. Udayin said: Who will count for me, or entrust me? What is the fault if it flows into the great eastern ocean? What is the fault if it flows into the great southern, western, or northern ocean? What is the fault if it flows into rivers, lakes, or ponds? Then, those monks who were content with little rebuked, saying: Why do these monks knowingly water grass, dung, and land with water containing living beings, or have others water it? They rebuked, reviled, and ridiculed. At that time, the monks reported this matter to the Bhagavan. Then, because of this event, this basis, and this situation, the Bhagavan convened the monastic community of monks and rebuked Udayin, saying: Your behavior is not like a monk, not in accordance, not appropriate, not in accordance with the rules; this is not something that a renunciate should do. After rebuking him in various ways, he saw the ten benefits of establishing the training rule and said: My hearers should recite and study the basis of discipline in this way: If any monk knowingly waters grass, dung, or land with water containing living beings, or has others water it, he commits a downfall. Thus, the training rule was established. The place was कौशाम्बी (Kauśāmbī, a city in ancient India), the person was Udayin, the affliction was carelessness, and the fault was knowingly using water containing living beings for other purposes. Among them, "any monk" refers to Udayin or others.
