The venerable Nanda made the newly ordained young monks happy by saying, 'Come, venerable ones, let us go on pilgrimage! There we shall also subdue the opponents, proclaim our own fame, and accomplish gains. You shall also be free from the busyness of alms bowls, robes, nets, bowls, belts, acceptance, recitation, chanting, yoga, contemplation, and tending to the sick.' When the monks knew that this person was an evil practitioner, no one was willing to go on pilgrimage with him. A beggar said, 'Venerable Nanda, I will go on pilgrimage with you.' The monks said to that beggar, 'This beggar is an evil practitioner, you will be hindered.' The beggar said, 'I am old, I have no dependence on him for dwelling, non-acceptance, recitation, chanting, yoga, or contemplation, what can he do to me?' Thus, he invalidated the words of those monks and went on pilgrimage with him. When Nanda crossed the outer border, he said, 'Beggar, take this axe for a while.' 'Venerable Nanda, have you not seen the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha? What is the use of these useless things?' Nanda said, 'Beggar, why are you not taking it for a while? Do you think you are smarter than me? Or why are you saying that to me?' The beggar said, 'Even if not a wise person, I am just speaking reason.' Nanda thought, 'I must make this beggar unhappy.' So the two of them gradually went on pilgrimage, and came to the side of a mountain cliff monastery. In that monastery, the Sangha struck the gandi of the dwelling, and the beggar went inside, obtained Nanda and his own dwelling, and stayed there. Nanda was distracted by noisy talk outside, and did not come until nightfall. That beggar then prepared a seat for Nanda on the roof.

Having completely set aside the foot water and washing the feet, after washing both feet outside the monastery, he entered the lower room, prepared his bed, and slept. When his eyes were closed, Nanda came and knocked on the door. The almsman did not open the door, but said, "Go upstairs and prepare your bed and sleep!" Nanda climbed to the roof, washed both feet, and entered the room. He called out, "Almsman!" The almsman said, "Venerable Nanda, what is it?" Nanda was skilled in sound. He aimed the leg of the bed directly at the almsman's forehead, pressing down with such force that the leg of the bed would break through the roof and fall on the almsman's forehead. The leg of the bed struck the almsman's forehead, and his forehead was injured. The almsman said, "Venerable Nanda, I am hurt!" Nanda said, "Hey, almsman, what are you saying?" The almsman thought, "If I make a sound, he will steal my old and infirm bed." So he said nothing and endured it. The next morning, he got up early and went to Shravasti, where he told the monks in detail what had happened to him. The monks rebuked him, saying, "Why do monks knowingly damage the roofs of the Sangha monasteries by deliberately placing heavy objects on beds or stools to sit or lie down?" The monks reported this matter to the Blessed One. Because of this incident, this origin, and this occasion, the Blessed One convened the Sangha of monks and rebuked Nanda, saying, "This is not the behavior of a monk, it is not in accordance, it is not proper, it is not in accordance with the rules. This is not something that a renunciant should do!" The Blessed One rebuked him in various ways and, having observed the ten benefits of establishing precepts, admonished my Shravaka disciples to recite this training rule as follows: "If any monk knowingly damages the roof of a Sangha monastery by deliberately placing heavy objects on a bed or stool to sit or lie down, he commits a Patayantika offense." The Blessed One established the precept. The place was Shravasti, and the person was Nanda.

ye dga'. Afflictions are obstacles, and offenses are sitting with roots growing on the top of the Sangha monastery. Among them, what is a bhikshu? It is the son of Shakya, nye dga', or someone like him. What is the Sangha? It is the Sangha of the Buddha's disciples. What is a monastery? It is a place where four activities can be performed: walking, standing, sitting, and lying down. What is the sky above? It is the sky above. What is a roof? It is a roof of grass or a roof of leaves. What is a bed? It is the bed itself. What is a small bed? It is the small bed itself. What is taking root? It is the feet taking root. What is knowingly? It is knowing oneself, or being told by others. What is pressing down with weight? It is suppressing with force. What is sitting? It is where thieves place things. What is sleeping? It is lying down on one's side. What is a downfall? It is as before. So, how does a downfall occur? Here, the characteristics of this are to be understood through the actual object and the preparation, and the establishment of the downfall through the preparation of the preparation, as well as the absence of downfall, what is to be learned, and what is to be remedied. Among them, here, the establishment of the actual object of downfall is: a bhikshu, regarding the roof of a Sangha monastery, which is not covered with plaster, nor covered with turf, nor covered with something similar, but something that should be pressed down, such as a bed, etc., whose roots are pulled out like stakes, and something that can be inserted is not tilted, and footrests are not inserted, knowingly pressing down with weight, causing roots to grow and sit, this constitutes the actual object of a downfall. There is no harm to the Sangha monastery itself. There is no harm to the roof above, which is not covered with plaster, not covered with turf, and not covered with something similar that is firmly covered. There is no harm to something that should be pressed down, such as a bed, etc., whose roots are pulled out like stakes, and something that can be inserted. There is no harm to not tilting it and not inserting footrests. Regarding the roof of the Sangha monastery and pressing
