He asked if the Sangha was satisfied, individually pleasing Ananda. He replied, "Venerable one, food has been given to Deva, and the Sangha of monks has been satisfied." Then, after the Blessed One had finished his meal, he washed his feet behind the monastery. In order to take a nap, he went into the monastery. Then, in the afternoon, the Blessed One arose from his nap and sat down in the midst of the Sangha of monks on the seat that had been prepared. Having sat down, the Blessed One addressed the monks, "Monks, I learned that the Sangha of monks had left here not long ago. Taking the key, from monastery to monastery, from temple to temple, from house to house, wandering around, going astray, and gradually walking, I went to a dilapidated temple. I saw that temple covered with dust, both inside and out. Having seen it, I exclaimed and rebuked, 'Alas, Brahmins and faithful householders squeeze their skin, flesh, and blood, give alms, and do good deeds, but the monks enjoy them without knowing the warmth or distinguishing them.' Monks, you should enjoy the offerings given in faith moderately, abandoning, on time, prudently, and with restraint. Then the Blessed One praised enjoying with moderation, abandonment, on time, prudence, and restraint, and having fully seen the ten benefits of establishing the precepts, my disciples should recite and study the basis of discipline in this way: 'If any monk, in the monastery of the Sangha, lays down or causes to be laid down a grass mat or a leaf mat, and leaves without gathering it up or causing it to be gathered up, it is a downfall.' The place where the precept was established was Shravasti, the people were two monks from the South, the afflictions were not knowing the warmth and enjoying without discrimination, and the fault was that of the Sangha.

In the monastery, many cushions were laid out, but they left without collecting them. The origin of the story is that the Buddha, the Bhagavan, was dwelling in Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's Park, in Shravasti. Many monks, together with fellow travelers, were going on a pilgrimage and went to a rocky mountain. There, they asked the householder for lodging, and the householder said: "Venerables, I will lend it to you with a vow, if I go out to beg for alms, I will lend it to you." The monks said: "Householder, we depend on our fellow travelers, and if they agree, we will eat." Since there were no beds or chairs there, they took many bundles of grass and prepared cushions that were knee-deep. The fellow travelers got up before dawn. Those monks also left without tidying up the cushions. When that householder and his wife were clearing away those cushions, they were completely exhausted in the morning. Again, many other monks came there and asked that householder for lodging, and the householder said: "Venerables, I will lend it to you with a vow, if you do not lay out excessive cushions, I will lend it to you." The monks said: "Householder, since there are no beds or chairs here, how can we sleep on the bare ground?" "Venerables, since you people who behave similarly have come here, you have laid out excessive cushions and left without tidying up. When I and my wife cleared them away, we were completely exhausted in the morning." Those monks spent the night tossing and turning on the bare ground. The next morning, they got up early and left, and the householder complained to the monks, saying that the previous monks had laid out cushions in other people's houses and left without tidying up, and we spent the night tossing and turning on the bare ground. The monks reported this matter to the Bhagavan, and the Bhagavan said: "Cushions should also be tidied up in other people's houses." After the Bhagavan said, "Cushions should also be tidied up in other people's houses," many monks, together with fellow travelers, wanted to go on a pilgrimage and went to a rocky mountain.
