After gathering the Sangha, because of disputes in the Sangha, he rebuked in various ways, saying that actions that are not those of a renunciate, actions that are not in accordance, actions that are not proper, actions that are not in accordance with the Dharma, are not to be done by those who have renounced. Having fully observed the ten benefits of establishing the precepts, my Shravaka disciples should recite and study the root of discipline in this way: 'If one violates the admonition, one commits a Patayantika offense.' The place where the precept was established is Kaushambi. The person is the Sangha. The affliction is seeking the wrong path. The fault is a Bhikshu violating the admonition. The term 'if one violates the admonition' refers to the thought, speech, words, names, sounds, expressions, definite words, the path of words, the actions of speech, and the expressions of speech when one violates the admonition. The term 'commits a Patayantika offense' is the same as before. So, how does one commit a Patayantika offense? Here, one should understand the nature of this by establishing the Patayantika offense through the actual basis, the preparation, and the preparation of the preparation, as well as the non-offense, what should be studied, and what should be confessed. Here, the establishment of the actual basis for the Patayantika offense is: if a Bhikshu, intending to violate with words an admonition that pertains to dispute, speaks it, then it becomes the actual basis for the Patayantika offense of violating the admonition. There is no fault in violating with words an admonition that pertains to dispute among the Bhikshus. There is no fault in any thought of intending to violate. There is no fault in responding with other answers to whatever questions one is asked. There is no fault if the listener understands the meaning of 'this person has spoken the wrong path.' The agent here is a Bhikshu violating with words an admonition that pertains to dispute. If these limbs are complete, it becomes an actual basis for the Patayantika offense: a Bhikshu, an admonition that pertains to dispute, violating it with those words, intending to do so there, and the Sangha including him in that number. If those limbs are incomplete, there is a fault accordingly. The Patayantika offense of preparation is a Dukkata, that is, as long as one begins the preparation for the Patayantika offense of violating the admonition and does not reach the actual basis, it is a Dukkata. The actual basis and the preparation are different.

Whatever actions are committed, each one has a fault. There is a fault in instructing a degraded monk and an unchaste monk. There is a fault in instructing a nun. There is a fault in instructing one who has not taken full ordination. If one instructs an outsider renunciate, one with the appearance of a householder, a non-human being, or a domestic animal, it is blameworthy. There is a fault in instructing something that is not within the scope of discussion. If one avoids speaking, there is a fault. If one avoids saying that one does not remember, there is a fault. If the listener does not understand the meaning, there is a fault. If the Sangha does not allow him to join, there is a fault. The combination of combinations of downfall is a minor fault. As many combinations as there are, so many combinations of combinations there are. The combination of faults of combination is also a fault, a minor fault. There is no downfall because there is no intention, and there is no downfall in speaking to others. If what is said is suffering, then there is no downfall in speaking to others. Therefore, if one asks if one sees something to be killed, one says: Let this fire be extinguished for a moment, drink water for a moment, wipe with something for a moment, see the sky, see the fingernail. If one truly says that one sees a sentient being or something to be killed, there is no downfall. There is no downfall for a beginner, a madman, one who is mentally disturbed, or one who is afflicted by feelings. What should be learned is that a monk should learn not to rely on all the ways that lead to the downfall of avoiding instruction in all places and at all times. One should not rely on the place where the four great elements must be done. One should not distinguish the four great elements without closing the door of harm. A monk who avoids instruction with words of instruction, or who avoids instruction by not speaking, the Sangha should not include the avoidance of instruction and the avoidance of speaking in the number of those who avoid by means of a single request. To include instruction in the number of those who avoid should be done as follows: Having prepared the dwelling, strike the gandi, and instruct the monks truthfully with the words of questioning. When all the Sangha has gathered and is in harmony, one monk should make a request. It should be done like this: Gather here
