At another time, those women, while massaging, wiping, and bathing, would observe each other's secret marks. They saw good and bad marks just as the venerable Caraka had described. They were not harmonious, they quarreled, they blamed each other, and sometimes they reconciled, they slandered the venerable Caraka, attacked each other, and spoke harshly. The monks reported this matter to the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One thought: all these minor faults have arisen because the monks preach the Dharma to women. Therefore, the Blessed One admonished the monks not to preach the Dharma to women, but to preach the Dharma with five sentences, to preach the Dharma with six sentences, to arrange for a man to be present, and to preach the Dharma as they wished. The group of six monks placed dogs, monkeys, calves, old prostitutes, cripples, and children beside them, and preached the Dharma to women as they pleased, boasting and being arrogant, slandering those monks who had few desires, attacking each other, and speaking harshly. The monks reported this matter to the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One, in response to this incident, these four topics of discussion, and this situation, convened the monastic community of monks and rebuked the group of six monks, saying: This behavior is not in accordance with the conduct of a renunciate, it is not in accordance, it is not appropriate, it is not in accordance with the rules, it is not something that a renunciate should do. The Blessed One fully saw the ten benefits of establishing the training rules, therefore my disciples who are hearers should recite and study the basis of training in the Vinaya as follows: If a monk preaches the Dharma to a woman, exceeding five or six sentences, unless a wise man is present, he commits an offense entailing expiation. The Blessed One established this training rule. The place was Sravasti. The person was Caraka. The affliction was desire. The offense was preaching the Dharma to a woman without a wise man present, exceeding five or six sentences. Among them, "monk" refers to the group of six monks, or others like them. "To a woman" refers to
