There is no fault in any false statement that belongs to the category of downfall. There is no fault if the listener belongs to the human realm and is thought to understand the meaning. The agent here is the transformation of the perception of an object known in meaning into another. In this case, the five limbs become the root downfall: the transformation of perception itself, speaking in one's sleep, the listener belonging to the human realm and naturally existing, the falsehood itself becoming a downfall, and others understanding the meaning. If these limbs are incomplete, there is a minor fault as appropriate. The downfall of action is a misdeed: as long as the action of committing the downfall of lying is undertaken, until the root downfall is not reached, it is a misdeed. For each different action committed in relation to the root downfall, there is a separate misdeed. When one intends to lie, thinking, "I will lie," this belongs to the action, and therefore it is a misdeed. A human being is a limb of verbal expression, therefore there is a misdeed towards non-humans. If there is a misdeed towards animals, there is a fault. In terms of expression, understanding the meaning itself is a limb, therefore if the listener does not understand the meaning due to their own defects, etc., it is a misdeed. The downfall of the action of action is a subtle misdeed: as many actions as there are, there are also actions of action; the action is a misdeed, and the action of action is also a misdeed, that is, a subtle misdeed. There is no downfall when the object is false but the perception is true, there is no downfall in speaking in this way. Because there is not only one way to lie, if the intervention of lying is only incidental, there is no downfall. Because it has already been said. If what is said will become suffering, then there is no downfall in saying something else. Therefore, when asked, "Did you see the one to be killed?" one should answer, "Let's warm ourselves by the fire for a moment, let's drink some water for a moment, let's rest for a moment, I saw the sky, I saw the fingernail." If, in ultimate terms, one says that one has not seen the sentient being or the one to be killed, there is no downfall. There is no downfall for a beginner, one who is insane, one who is mentally disturbed, or one who is afflicted by feelings. What should be learned is that a bhikshu should avoid the downfall of lying in all places and at all times.

One should be taught not to rely on all changes. Oaths should not be abandoned. The remedy is as before. The preparatory act of lying is a minor offense. The act of preparation and the root downfall can be lifted from the downfall by restraint, confession, and repentance. Among these, if the minor offense of the preparatory act and the preparatory act itself are offenses that should be restrained, then there is no need to confess and repent to others. Instead, one should see the previous downfall in one's own mind, and from then on restrain oneself, regretting the previous act, and thinking that one will not do it again in the future. By restraining oneself in this way, one can be freed from the downfall. If it is an offense that should be repented of, then one must confess and repent to others in order to remedy it. Among these, the offenses that should be restrained are those that belong to the category of offenses that should be repented of, that is, the so-called mental offenses. The offenses that should be repented of are the actions of body and speech. Among these, the rite of confession and repentance for offenses that should be repented of is as follows: A monk should not conceal a downfall. If a minor offense of the preparatory act of a downfall occurs, or any offense that should be repented of, one should not conceal it even with a single thought of concealment. Instead, one should immediately take off one's shoes, and in the presence of a monk who is fully ordained, naturally abiding, of the same view, residing within the boundary, and different from the downfall in name and lineage, one should squat down, bow with folded hands, and speak the name of the category of downfall and the type of offense committed. One can confess and repent at the same time. The mantra for this is as follows: "Venerable one, please listen. I, a monk named so-and-so, have committed the downfall of lying, the preparatory act of the downfall of lying, and the minor offense and offense caused by the preparatory act of so-and-so. I, a monk named so-and-so, confess this downfall in the presence of the Venerable one. I do not conceal it. I repent. By confessing and repenting, I will abide in happiness. If I do not confess and repent, I will not." Repeat this three times. The listener asks: "Do you see the downfall?"
