Thus, they arranged to debate the next day in a certain garden. That night, Lagjya thought: If I temporarily defeat the Brahmin, I will lose a hundred avenues, how should I prepare dinner? If the Brahmin defeats me, I will lose my reputation. So, the next day he did not go to the debate location. After repeating this two or three times, the Shakya's son Lagjya, in order to avoid the debate, prearranged the location, code, and signs, and deliberately did not go. Other heretics then slandered, saying: These knowledgeable Shakya monks are liars, they have not turned away from lying, have not abandoned it, have not individually abandoned it, having previously arranged the location, code, and signs, they deliberately do not go. They slandered, spread rumors, and spoke abusively. At that time, the monks reported this matter to the Blessed One. Then, because of this event, this origin, this occasion, the Blessed One convened the monastic community of monks, and rebuked the Shakya's son, the monk Lagjya, saying: This behavior, which is not like a monk, is not in accordance, is not appropriate, is not in accordance with the rules, is not something a renunciant should do. He rebuked in various ways, and fully saw the ten benefits of establishing precepts, therefore my hearers should recite and study this root of discipline thus: Knowingly lying, one commits a Patayantika offense. The place was Sravasti. The person was the Shakya's son, the monk Lagjya. The affliction was wanting to avoid the debate. The offense was knowingly lying. Among these, 'knowingly' means after consideration. 'Lying' means: there are nine kinds of lying, also eight kinds, also seven kinds, also six kinds, also five kinds, also four kinds, also two kinds. Among these, what are the nine kinds of lying? Groundlessly saying that one has committed a Parajika offense, a Sanghavasesa offense, a Patayantika offense, an offense to be confessed, a Dukkata offense, broken precepts,

It is a discussion about the deterioration of views, the deterioration of rituals, and the deterioration of livelihood. What are the eight situations? Groundlessly becoming defeated, Sanghavasesa, Patayantika, To be confessed to others, Dukkata, seeing, hearing, and discussing doubts. What are the seven situations? Groundlessly, discipline deteriorates, views deteriorate, rituals deteriorate, livelihood deteriorates, seeing, hearing, and discussing doubts. What are the six situations? When a monk wants to lie, he thinks, "I will lie." When lying, he thinks, "I am lying." After lying, he thinks, "I have lied." Lying based on groundless seeing, hearing, and doubt. What are the five situations? Groundlessly becoming defeated, Sanghavasesa, Patayantika, to be confessed to others, and discussing Dukkata. What are the four situations? Groundlessly, discipline deteriorates, views deteriorate, rituals deteriorate, and discussing livelihood deteriorates. What are the three situations? Groundlessly seeing, hearing, and discussing doubts. What are the other three situations? When wanting to lie, thinking, "I will lie." When lying, thinking, "I am lying." After lying, thinking, "I have lied." What are the two situations? When lying, thinking, "I am lying." After lying, thinking, "I have lied." There is no such thing as only one situation when lying. Lying can lead to becoming defeated, becoming Sanghavasesa, becoming a gross offense, becoming a Patayantika, or becoming a Dukkata. Among them, what is lying that leads to becoming defeated? For example, a monk claims to have superhuman qualities when he does not. What is lying that leads to becoming Sanghavasesa? For example, a monk is angry and harbors hatred, thinking, "I must separate this person from the Brahmacharya." Therefore, he accuses monks of groundless offenses that lead to defeat, even though they have not committed any offenses. What is becoming a gross offense? For example, a monk
