They would say, 'He resides in the Garden of Light.' If the Blessed One resided in the Pippala Cave, they would say, 'He resides in the Rede-cavati Cave.' If the Blessed One resided in the Rede-cavati Cave, they would say, 'He resides in the Pippala Cave.' They searched for the Blessed One but did not find him. When they were weary, exhausted, and fatigued, they went to where the venerable Sgacanran was. Then, the venerable Sgacanran asked them, 'Have you seen the Blessed One, noble ones?' The monk Sgacanran said, 'No, I have not seen him.' They laughed and said, 'Venerable Sgacanran, are you not deliberately teasing us?' 'Yes.' When they were scolding, mocking, and reviling, those monks reported it to the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One, in the morning, put on his robes, took his bowl and outer robe, and went to Rajagriha for alms. Having gone for alms in Rajagriha, and having finished his meal, in the afternoon, not going for alms, he went to the monastery of the venerable Sgacanran in Chuddavada. The venerable Sgacanran saw the Blessed One from afar. Having seen him, he prepared a seat for the Blessed One, water for washing his feet, and a footstool, and welcomed him, taking his outer robe, and said, 'Blessed One, please come here. Blessed One, it is good that you have come. Blessed One, please sit on the prepared seat.' The Blessed One sat on the prepared seat. Then, the Blessed One washed his feet himself, left a little water in the water container, poured it on the ground, and turned the water container upside down on the ground. The Blessed One said to the venerable Sgacanran, 'Sgacanran, did you see me leave a little water in the water container, pour it on the ground, and turn the water container upside down on the ground?' He replied, 'Venerable, I saw it.' The Blessed One said, 'Sgacanran, in the same way, for those foolish people who knowingly lie, without shame, without regard, without remorse,'

I say that the conduct of a monk is small, false, deceptive, and boastful. A Hearer, for example, a king's drunken elephant, coming from Matanga, young, sixty years old, with tusks as large as chariot axles, a broad chest, entering the battlefield. When it works with two hands, two feet, two thighs, waist and tail, two lungs, back, two ribs, throat, two ears, and two teeth, and works with its nose, destroying the enemy's army and the enemy's soldiers, then the king rides the elephant, thinking: This king's elephant protects its nose, so it has not completely lost its life. When the king's elephant works with two hands, two feet, two thighs, waist and tail, two lungs, back, two ribs, throat, two ears, two teeth, and also with its nose, destroying the enemy's army and the enemy's soldiers, then the king rides the elephant, thinking: This king's elephant does not protect its nose, so it has completely lost its life. Hearer, I say that at that time the king's elephant has nothing that it cannot do. Hearer, similarly, if someone knowingly tells lies, is without shame, without scruples, without guilt, without fault, I say that there is no evil deed that that foolish person cannot do. Then, at that time, the Blessed One spoke two verses: A sentient being who speaks falsehood, has transgressed one dharma, one who destroys the next world, there is no sin that this one does not commit. It is better to eat a burning iron ball, than to eat the offerings of the land with falsehood and without discipline. Hearer, just as people hold mirrors in order to observe their own images separately. Similarly, you too should thus separately examine the deeds of body, the deeds of speech, and the deeds of mind, and having separately examined them, completely purify them, and having completely purified them, abide in them greatly.

You should train in this way, Rāhula, you should train in this way. The Blessed One declared thus, the Sugata spoke thus, and the Teacher further declared thus: If you remember the Buddha's teachings, the actions of body and speech, and the many actions of mind, Rāhula, understand them individually. This is the work of a monk, Rāhula, train in this. If you train in this, you will be happy and without sin. Then, the Blessed One instructed the venerable Rāhula with teachings that were in accordance with the Dharma, caused him to truly receive them, truly praised him, and truly made him rejoice, and then he rose from his seat and departed. This is what happened for a while, the Buddha, the Blessed One, did not hesitate to establish the basis for the training of the Śrāvakas in order to subdue them for a while. The basis for the establishment is that the Buddha, the Blessed One, was residing in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's Park in Śrāvastī. At that time, there was a monk named Śākyaputra Hand-carrier in Śrāvastī, who was very eloquent and diligently followed the words of others. A Brahmin came from the south, who was well-versed in the Vedas and the branches of the Vedas, and was the teacher of Brahmins living in different places, and he also came to Śrāvastī with a retinue of many Brahmin boys. A Brahmin living in Śrāvastī, who had a very large retinue, began to argue with him, and whatever field of knowledge they discussed, the southerner silenced the Śrāvastī Brahmin and his retinue. At that time, the Śākyaputra monk Hand-carrier came there, and the Brahmin from the south said, 'Hey, monk, you have the marks of a teacher, it seems you are one of the best speakers. Although I have also learned some letters from my teacher, I would like to discuss something with you.' Hand-carrier said, 'Brahmin, it's okay, if the thought arises in my mind that I want to sharply refute your treatises, you can also come here.'
