They rebuke, saying it is for purification, they throw, they revile. At that time, the monks reported to the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One, because of this event, this origin, and this occasion, convened the monastic community of monks, and rebuked the group of six monks, saying: 'This is not the conduct of a renunciate, it is not in accordance, it is not proper, it is not in accordance with the rules. This is not something to be done by one who has gone forth.' He rebuked them in various ways, and having fully seen the ten benefits of establishing the precepts, he said: 'My hearers should recite the basis of learning the discipline in this way: 'If a monk digs the earth with his own hand, or causes another to dig, he commits an offense entailing expiation.'' Thus, he established the precept. The place was Sravasti (ancient Indian city), the persons were the group of six, the affliction was conduct unbecoming a renunciate, and the offense was digging the earth. Among these, 'monk' refers to the group of six or anyone else like them. 'With his own hand' means with his own hand. 'Earth' refers to two kinds of earth: natural earth and non-natural earth. 'Natural earth' refers to earth that becomes muddy after three months of rain, or after six months if there is no rain. 'Non-natural earth' refers to anything other than that. 'Digs' means he himself digs. 'Causes to dig' means he causes another to dig. 'Commits an offense entailing expiation' means as before. So, how does an offense occur? Here, too, the offense is determined by the actual deed, the preparatory act, and the preparatory act of the preparatory act, as well as by the absence of offense, what should be learned, and the remedies, so that the definition of this can be understood. Among these, here, the determination of the actual offense is: if a monk digs the earth with his hand, without any permissible conjunction of constellations, except for inserting a stake about four fingers' breadth, and digs up soil, decayed matter, clay, lime ash, sand, and so on, and except for natural earth that has been made muddy, walls, roofs, and aggregates in which the earth element is predominant, and so on, understanding it in this way, if he digs or causes to dig with the intention of destroying it, each preparatory act of striking once becomes the actual offense of digging the earth, which entails expiation. There is no penalty for natural earth.

Do. Those of self-nature, the initial clay, if from the damaged limbs, if rain wets it, it is clay matured for three months. If rain does not wet it, it is clay matured for six months. For these, there is no offense. Walls and roofs have no offense. A collection of earth mixed with sand, if the earth is mostly itself, there is no offense. The thought of destruction itself has no offense. Recognizing it as earth has no offense. Digging or having someone dig has no offense. In each act of sowing, for each thing itself, there is no offense. The doer of this is the self-nature clay of earth, etc., mainly the doer of recognition. For this, with five limbs, it becomes a downfall of the actual thing, that is, a Bhikshu cannot allow with the astrology of the palm of the hand, unless inserting a peg of about four fingers' length. The self-nature clay of earth itself, and recognizing it there, and the thought of destruction itself, and digging or having someone dig. From these limbs, lacking any one, then according to the situation, an offense is committed. The downfall of the action is a misdeed, as long as the act of downfall of digging earth is started, until not touching the actual thing, it is a misdeed. For the actual thing, however many different actions are done, each is a misdeed. For not being the self-nature clay of earth, it is a misdeed. For the collection having less earth component, it is a misdeed. Earth burning is damage itself, therefore for it, it is a misdeed. For earth's oil and dust, and walls, and its debris residue, it is a misdeed. For stone ash material, and sand, and remaining substances that are not the essence of earth, it is a misdeed. Pulling out stakes, and drawing lines, and preventing the weight of transporting earth powder, and moving mud, and lifting seedlings etc. mixed with mud, and for being happy or unhappy about the heat and cold of the nature of destruction, it is a misdeed. The downfall of the action of the action is a subtle misdeed, however many actions there are, the action of the action is also that many, the action of the action of misdeed is also a misdeed, that is, a subtle misdeed. What has no downfall is, not being able to allow with the astrology of the palm of the hand, if not, inserting a peg of about four fingers' length has no downfall.
