It is a difference, the meaning of the word called "guarding," and the necessity is as before. This eighteenth also shows the tenth of the downfall precepts, namely, going with thieves, giving full ordination without having received it, digging the earth, staying too long in the host's house, abandoning placing near the training, hearing disputes, going without speaking, disrespectful behavior, drinking intoxicating substances, and the downfall of going at the wrong time. Among them, the origin of the downfall of going with thieves is that the Buddha Bhagavan was staying in Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Garden in Shravasti. A certain monk promised to stay in the summer retreat at the Kalanda site in the Doma Grove of Rajagriha. Then, after those three summer months had passed, that monk was endowed with Dharma robes, possessed of finished Dharma robes, and carrying a begging bowl and Dharma robes, he went to pay homage at the feet of the Bhagavan, seeking a companion to go to Shravasti. He saw some merchants cutting trees and said to them: Wise ones, where are you going? They replied: Venerable, we are going to Shravasti. Wise ones, I too will go to Shravasti with you. So he went with them. When they reached a steep mountain area, that is, the place where trees were being cut, those merchants cutting trees, fearing those cutting trees, began to go around the path, and that monk also went ahead. Those cutting trees saw him and said: Where do these merchants cutting trees want to go? Seeing that monk going ahead, they said: Wise ones, these merchants cutting trees innocently let the Shakyaputra renunciate go ahead, this person is guilty, let us kill him! So they beat that monk severely, broke his bowl, also broke the bowl and water pot, tore his Dharma robes, and thinking he was dead, abandoned him. Those merchants cutting trees said to that monk: Venerable, you have obtained the renunciation of youth from the king, please go to the king and report, and have them cut off the hands and feet of these tree cutters.

Be patient! They were afraid and asked that monk for forgiveness, and the monk's heart was like butter, so he forgave them. The woodcutters said: Even if the noble one forgives, we will not forgive. They again asked those woodcutters for forgiveness, and those woodcutters said: If you all, as many grain measurers as there are, do not allow us, as many woodcutters as there are, to measure grain, then we will also forgive. That monk eventually went to Shravasti, and the monks said to him: Venerable one, welcome, welcome! How did you pass safely? Venerable ones, how did you pass safely? I was almost deprived of my life and possessions by those grain measurers. Why did he relate that occasion in detail? The monks said: Are you allowed to go on a trade route with like-minded thieves? Because it is not allowed, such faults will occur. Then, some monks with few desires scolded: Why does the monk go on a trade route with like-minded thieves? They rebuked, they slandered, they ridiculed. At that time, the monks reported the matter to the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One, regarding this event, this origin, and this situation, convened the assembly of monks and rebuked that monk, saying: Your behavior is not like a monk, not conforming, not proper, not in accordance with the rules, not something to be done by one who has gone forth. The Blessed One rebuked him in various ways. The Blessed One, having seen the ten benefits of establishing the training, therefore, my disciples should establish the basis of training in the Discipline in this way: Again, if any monk goes on a trade route with like-minded thieves, even if it is only to another village, he commits an offense entailing expiation. The Blessed One established this precept. The place was Shravasti. The person was a monk of this Dharma. The affliction was ignorance. The fault was going on a trade route with like-minded thieves. Among them, "any monk" refers to a person of this Dharma, or anyone else like him. "With like-minded thieves" refers to thieves.

"Ma" refers to robbers, those who destroy villages, and merchants who engage in fraudulent trade, etc. "Traveling on the road" refers to going to a temple. Even between villages is acceptable, meaning even within a distance of one yojana. "Falling offense" refers to burning, cooking, and causing sentient beings to fall into hell, the animal realm, the preta realm, evil destinies, and places of degeneration. Furthermore, if the offense is not confessed and not individually confessed, it will obscure virtuous dharmas, hence it is called a "falling offense." So, how does a falling offense arise? Here, the falling offense is established through the actual deed, the preparatory action, and the preparatory action of the preparatory action, as well as the absence of offense, what should be learned, and remedies, one should understand the commentary here. Here, the establishment of the actual offense is that a bhikshu with robbers who destroy villages, or merchants who engage in fraudulent trade, transporting themselves, guiding the way, and except for those who cannot act, if they walk together on the road as they please, then for every yojana of distance, walking with the robbers will become the actual offense. If it is not under the control of others, but walking as one pleases, there is no fault. For robbers and those who engage in fraudulent trade, transporting themselves, guiding the way, and except for those who cannot act, there is no fault. For places where there is no danger on the road, there is no fault. For any human robbers and those who engage in fraudulent trade, there is no fault. For all previous situations, there is no fault. For the same road, there is no fault. For exceeding the distance of one yojana, there is no fault. For part of the day or night, there is no fault. The author here is the human traveler, the robbers who destroy villages, or the merchants who engage in fraudulent trade, and the distance of one yojana on the road itself. If these limbs are complete, it will become the actual offense, that is, the human traveler, the robbers who destroy villages, or the merchants who engage in fraudulent trade, and walking on the road as one pleases, transporting themselves, guiding the way, and except for those who cannot act, as well as deceivers and means of theft are very
