There is likewise no transgression regarding that (lost) item. There is no transgression in looking at the face with a mirror and water, etc., in order to examine water, wounds, wrinkles, white hair, and to discern prior and subsequent signs. There is no transgression when endangered by karma, diarrhea, madness, mental confusion, and feelings. What should be learned is that a bhikshu should learn not to rely in any way, in all places and at all times, on anything that belongs to the basis of enjoyment and that would become a transgression. Precious jewels and places where precious jewels are mentioned, monasteries and the vicinity of monasteries, should not be forgotten and abandoned. It should be collected and gathered within seven or eight days. What should be done is to cover the path of travel with earth or collections of leaves. Before all the signs of ownership are met, it should not be given just because he says, "I am the owner." If the owner does not appear within seven or eight days, then it should be placed in the sangha's treasury. In the sangha's treasury, it should be kept for up to six months. After six months, if the owner does not appear, then it can be used wherever it was found, whether from the property of the Buddha or the sangha. For items that are not suitable for the Buddha and the sangha to use, a stable substitute should be sought. If he buys a stable substitute, and then the owner appears, it should be given after asking for permission if fire is given. If he asks for interest, it should be said, "Shouldn't you think it is a kindness that we have completely protected it?" If threatened by thieves, etc., one should first hide or carry away one's own belongings and leave. After that, if possible, one should recite mantras or carry away the sangha's property and the stupa's property, gold, etc., and leave. Hiding or entrusting those should be done by a faithful householder or a novice monk. If there are none of those, one should do it oneself. Hiding or entrusting those, if it is necessary to dig the ground, should also be done by a faithful householder or a novice monk. If there are none of those, one should do it oneself. If free from fear, the hidden and carried items should be given back. If it is necessary to dig up the hidden and entrusted items from under the ground, it should also be done by a faithful householder or a novice monk.
