The fifty-sixth (article) has been explained. The basis for mitigating offenses is that the Buddha Bhagavan was residing in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove of Anathapindika's Garden. Near Joy, there were two novices named Thorn and Great One. Because they had not abandoned desire, the monks made noise with them, made clamor, quarreled with each other, sought trouble everywhere, made loud noises, were arrogant and conceited, and beat each other. Later, they also observed those offenses that should be observed, confessed those offenses that should be confessed, and through joy, effort, and struggle, they abandoned all afflictions, realized the Arhatship, and also manifested supernatural powers. At another time, the novices Thorn and Great One were picking flowers, when they saw some monks descending from the sky with supernatural powers, and the two of them said: Who are you? They said: We are named so and so. The two of them said: You used to do such and such things with us. They said: That is indeed so, but we have already observed those offenses that should be observed, confessed those offenses that should be confessed, and through joy, effort, and struggle, we have abandoned all afflictions, realized the Arhatship, and also manifested supernatural powers. At that time, the novices Thorn and Great One had this evil view: Those desires that the Tathagata said are obstacles, even if one relies on them, will not become obstacles, and that is how I understand the Dharma spoken by the Tathagata. When many monks heard this, they reported the matter to the Bhagavan. The Bhagavan instructed: Monks, you must make the novices Thorn and Great One, and others like him, abandon that root.

Thereafter, one should first admonish. If they still do not give up, they should be admonished with admonishment and the four karmas. If they still do not give up, they should perform the act of expulsion with admonishment and the four karmas. Even after the monks have done this, those individuals stubbornly cling to and are attached to that very form of sinful view, asserting, "This alone is true, the rest is false," and then the monks perform the act of expulsion on those two. After the act of expulsion was performed on those two, they went weeping to Nanda. Nanda said, "Thorns and Great One, why are you two here?" The two said, "Those with black bowls have performed the act of expulsion on us two." Nanda said, "May those who have performed the act of expulsion on you two be expelled from villages, cities, countries, and the three realms! However, do those who have performed the act of expulsion not have villages and cities? Please stay, please be patient." So he brings those two near, shows nearness, and sleeps in the same place with those two. Then the monks of few desires rebuke, "Why do the monks knowingly bring near those expelled monks, show nearness, and sleep in the same place with them?" They revile, they denounce, they mock. At that time, the monks reported this matter to the Blessed One. Then the Blessed One, because of this event, this origin, and this circumstance, convened the assembly of monks and rebuked Nanda, saying, "This is not the conduct of a renunciate, it is not in accordance, it is not suitable, it is not in accordance with the Dharma, it is not something to be done by one who has gone forth." He rebuked him in various ways, and having truly seen the ten benefits of establishing the training, he said, "My hearers should recite this basis of training in the Discipline as follows: If a monk should say, 'Those desires that the Blessed One has said are obstructions, even if one associates with them, they will not become obstructions, thus I understand the Dharma taught by the Blessed One,' then to that monk

The monks should admonish that novice thus: 'Novice, how do you think that those desires which the Blessed One has said are obstructions? Even if one relies on those, they will not become obstructions.' Do not say: 'I have understood the Dharma taught by the Blessed One.' Do not slander the Blessed One! Slandering the Blessed One will not lead to good results. The Blessed One would not say such a thing. Reverend Novice, the Blessed One has said in many ways that those things that obstruct because of desire are indeed obstructions. If one relies on those, they will become obstructions. Novice, abandon this kind of sinful view!' When the monks admonish that novice in this way, if he abandons that basis, that is good. If he does not abandon it, in order to make him abandon that basis, he should be admonished and taught correctly two or three times. If he abandons that basis after being admonished and taught correctly two or three times, that is good. If he does not abandon it, the monks should say to that novice: 'From now on, novice, do not say that the Blessed One, the Thus-Gone One, the Arhat, the Perfectly and Fully Awakened One, is your teacher. Do not follow any who practice the pure life, wise men, or those like a master. The right that monks and novices have to sleep together in one place for up to two nights is also no longer yours from now on. Foolish one, you have been expelled, go elsewhere!' Furthermore, if any monk knowingly accepts, teaches, or sleeps in the same place with a novice who has been expelled in this way, it is a downfall. The Blessed One made this precept. The place was Shravasti, the person was Nanda, the affliction was sinful desire, and the offense was gathering up an expelled novice. Among these, 'novice' means someone who is like a thorn or very coarse, or anything else like that. 'Saying this' means if he says, 'Those desires that the Blessed One said are obstructions,' where 'desires' means the five desirable qualities.
