Saying "will hit," for what reason did the monks become angry, agitated, and fierce, dissatisfied, and scold, saying they would hit the monk. Throwing things, saying bad things, at that time the monks reported to the Blessed One. Then the Blessed One, because of this event, this reason, at this time, convened the monastic community of monks, and rebuked Charka, saying that this is not the conduct of a renunciant, not in accordance, not proper, not in accordance with the rules, a renunciant should not do such a thing, and rebuked him in various ways. Because he fully saw the ten benefits of establishing the precepts, my hearers should recite and study the root of discipline as follows: If any monk becomes angry, agitated, and fierce, dissatisfied, and hits a monk, he commits a downfall. The place where the precept was established is Shravasti (Śrāvastī, an ancient Indian city, now in Uttar Pradesh), the person is Charka, the affliction is the secondary affliction of hatred, and the crime is hitting a monk. Among them, which monk refers to Charka or anyone else like him. Angry, agitated, and fierce, dissatisfied, means being overwhelmed by the power of anger and agitation. Monk refers to a person of this order. Hitting means the act of hitting. Downfall means the same as before. So, how does one commit a downfall? Here, too, the downfall is established through the main action, the preparatory action, and the preparatory action of the preparatory action, as well as non-offense, what should be learned, and repentance to understand this definition. Among them, here the establishment of the downfall of the main action is that a monk, with a disturbed mind, uses his body or something thrown by his body, or anything related to his body, even with a toe or mustard seed or grass, to hit another monk, just touching, for each hitting tool, it becomes the main action of the downfall of hitting. A disturbed mind, angry, agitated, and fierce, any dissatisfaction, there is no rebuke. The monk to be hit is a person of this order who has received full ordination, has not renounced the precepts, and has the same name and view, anyone is fine.

There is no fault. There is no fault for the body or what is thrown by it, or anything related to it. The body refers to internal grasping, such as one, two, three, four, or five fingers, or a fist, elbow, shoulder, head, chest, back, waist, thigh, knee, and patella, etc. What is thrown by it refers to things thrown outwards, such as arrows, iron arrows, half-arrow iron objects, arrowheads, barbed arrowheads, four-cornered arrowheads, arrowheads shaped like karavira leaves, arrowheads with sand cores, wheels, one-pointed vajras, large arrows, single-pointed weapons, and fir cones, etc. What is related to it refers to things that are related to both of the above, such as knives, long knives, single-edged knives, double-edged knives, short spears, throwing spears, water knives, and blades of grass, etc. To illustrate the scope of these three, it is said that even if one strikes with a toe, mustard seed, or grass, there is no fault. Internal grasping, such as a toe; what is thrown outwards, such as a mustard seed; what is thrown outwards, such as a mustard seed; what is related to both, such as striking with grass; even if one strikes with something smaller than that, one will not incur a downfall. If, after striking, bruising and swelling occur, then it becomes an actual downfall. What if the downfall occurs at the time of striking? Therefore, it is said that merely touching, there is no fault for touching the body, etc., with these things. If there are many striking tools, does it constitute one downfall? No. Therefore, it is said that for each striking tool, it constitutes one downfall. For example, each finger constitutes one downfall, each mustard seed constitutes one downfall, each blade of grass constitutes one downfall, etc., there is no fault in this. The agent of this is the bhikshu who is the object of striking, and any number of striking tools. The completion of this requires five branches: a mind with affliction, and the bhikshu who is the object of striking.
