When begging, if the containers are broken, those that are intact should be given away as a permanent gift. In order to clean the containers, the storeroom should be inspected. Earthen and copper containers should be placed separately. The Sangha's water should be placed nearby. The water should not be placed haphazardly. For this purpose, a water house should be built. The water house should be built behind the monastery or on the right side of the back, or in the southwest corner. The water house should have windows, a brick floor, a water trough, a door, and window shutters and skylights should be installed. In order to place a water filter in the water trough, a crossbar should be made. The water containers should be placed on wooden stools. Alternatively, they should be placed on brick platforms, with wooden boards and bamboo mats laid on top. The Sangha's, individual's, one's own and others' water containers, up to and including bathing water, should be kept clean. The bathing water itself should also be kept clean. Drinking water should also be kept clean. Drinking water should not be served with unclean hands or clothing. The water containers should be cleaned regularly. For deep water containers that cannot be reached by hand, they should be cleaned with a brush made of Ushira grass, lotus stamens, or cotton cloth tied to the end of a stick. The Ushira grass brush and so on should be protected from food residue. The washed water containers should also be dried. In order to avoid rushing when washing and drying, all the containers should not be washed and dried at once. All work related to water, such as the water house's accessories and water filters, should be done by students and attendants. Repairs are to be done as before. Using water with living creatures is a downfall, and this forty-first has been explained. The thirtieth volume of the "Extensive Commentary on the Pratimoksha Sutra, Collected from the Vinaya," the origin of the downfall of dwelling in a house prepared for sleeping is: The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was dwelling in Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Garden in Shravasti.

The venerable Charga, with the jewel of wisdom in mind, put on his robe in the morning, took his bowl and Dharma robe, and went to Shravasti to beg for alms. In Shravasti, there was a perfume seller who had taken a young wife, and not long after, he laid out his goods, thinking, "I will go and enjoy myself with my wife!" An inappropriate thought arose, and he began to pack up his stall. The venerable Charga knew his thoughts and thought, "If I go, I will deprive him of this hope!" So he went to his house first, sat down on a seat, and began to teach the Dharma to the girl. After a while, the perfume seller came and said to his wife, "Offer food to the venerable Charga and ask him to leave!" The venerable Charga said, "I am as good as you say, I have completely ruined my own virtuous deeds, if I come to teach you the Dharma, don't you want to listen? Sit down and listen to the Dharma!" He insisted that he sit down. He taught the Dharma until he was completely free from bondage. They reviled, saying, "The conduct of these Shakyaputra ascetics is shameful! The conduct of the Brahmins is shameful! They can't even control their own wives." They accused, insulted, and slandered. The monks said, "What are these monks doing? Why do these monks knowingly violate the rules, sneaking into other people's houses and sitting on seats?" They accused, insulted, and slandered. At that time, the monks told the Blessed One about this matter. Then, the Blessed One, because of this event, this origin, this occasion, convened the Sangha of monks, and rebuked Charga, saying, "This is not the conduct of an ascetic, it is not in accordance, it is not lawful, it is not in accordance with the rules, this is not something a renunciate should do!" He rebuked him in various ways. The Blessed One, seeing the ten benefits of establishing precepts, said, "In order for my Shravaka disciples to learn the Vinaya, this is how the basis of learning should be recited: If any monk knowingly violates the rules, sneaking into another person's house and sitting on a seat, he commits a sin of downfall." The Blessed One established the precepts. The location was Shravasti. Regarding...
