Then please offer a meal under the umbrella tomorrow. They replied, "Let it be done." The group of six monks had those patrons prepare sixty portions of food for that day, and then they went to the house of Shakya Mingchen. They saw that neither food had been prepared nor seats had been arranged. The group of six monks said to those who lived by Shakya Mingchen's generosity, "Wise ones, you have invited the Buddha and the Sangha of monks, but you treat them like a corpse smaller than the heart, neither preparing food under the umbrella nor arranging seats. How can you offer a meal under the umbrella to the Buddha and the Sangha of monks?" Those people replied, "Venerables, are you the only ones who are awake? The Buddha and the Sangha of monks have already had their meal and left." The group of six monks said, "What shall we do about our food?" Those people replied, "Venerables, please wait a moment while we tell Shakya Mingchen." They went and said to Shakya Mingchen, "Venerable, the group of six monks has arrived and is begging for food." Shakya Mingchen said, "Give them a little of the leftover food today." They went back and said, "Venerables, please sit down and eat." They began to distribute the food. The group of six monks said, "Shakya Mingchen, with a very big mouth, invited the Blessed One to have a meal under the umbrella in his garden tomorrow together with the Sangha of monks. If the Buddha and the Sangha of monks can be invited with such food, then even servants could invite the Buddha and the Sangha of monks every day. What does this poor person have? Today, get milk from the house of so-and-so, get yogurt from the house of so-and-so, get butter from the house of so-and-so, get fish meat from the house of so-and-so, get meat from the house of so-and-so, get dried meat from the house of so-and-so." They begged for food from other people's houses for themselves, ate it there, and then went to the temple. The monks said to them, "Long-lived ones,"

Where did you eat the food? Right there. Didn't you see us there? We arrived later. What kind of food did you eat? Milk, yogurt, butter, fish, meat, and dried meat. The monks said: We didn't get that kind of food. The group of six said: Where would a poor person get that kind of food? We begged from house to house and ate it there. Is it permissible for you to beg for food for yourselves and take it from other people's houses to eat? Maybe it is, maybe it isn't, but are we supposed to starve to death? Then those monks with few desires scolded: Why do the monks beg for food for themselves and take it from other people's houses to eat? They condemned, criticized, and insulted them. At that time, the monks reported to the Blessed One. Then, because of this event, this origin, this circumstance, the Blessed One convened the monastic community of monks, and rebuked the group of six: This is not the conduct of a renunciant, it is not in accordance, it is not proper, it is not in accordance with the rules, a renunciant should not do such a thing. After condemning them in various ways, the Blessed One saw the ten benefits of establishing precepts, therefore my hearers should recite and study the basis of discipline in this way: The food that the Blessed One said that monks can beg for is like this: milk, yogurt, butter, fish, meat, and dried meat, etc. If any monk begs for such food for himself and takes it from other people's houses to eat, he commits an offense entailing expiation. The place is in Shakya (Kapilavastu). The people are the group of six. The afflictions are greed for one's own enjoyment and desire for food. The offense is eating food begged for oneself from other people's houses when not sick. The origin of the precept is that the Buddha, the Blessed One, was staying in the Nyagrodha Park in Shakya. A sick monk asked the doctor: Wise one, please give me medicine. The doctor said: Please drink milk. The monk said: Who will give me milk? The doctor said: Beg from other people's houses.

Thus I have heard. The Well-Gone, the Blessed One, established the basis for the precepts. "Venerable one, your teacher, the compassionate one, having made the Sangha the condition, whatever is allowed, such a place will exist," when they said this, the monks requested the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said: "Therefore, except in times of urgency." Similarly, it is allowed for a sick monk to beg for yogurt, butter, fish, meat, and dried meat from other houses, as before. Then, the Blessed One praised the desire for learning, respect for learning, and diligence in the requisites for learning, and spoke to the monks words of Dharma that were in accordance with this, mostly related to this, and in harmony with this, and then said to the monks: "Monks, therefore, the former is prohibited, and this is allowed, my hearers should recite the basis of the precepts of the Vinaya in this way: Whatever the Blessed One has said about the food for the monks is this, namely milk, yogurt, butter, fish, meat, and dried meat. Furthermore, if any monk, not being sick, begs for such food from other houses for himself, and eats or swallows it, he commits an offense of downfall." The place is Kapilavastu, the person is a sick monk. Afflictions and faults are absent. Among these, the Blessed One means the Thus-Gone One, the Arhat, the Perfectly Awakened One. The monks mean those who believe in this Dharma. What is said about food is what is explained in detail. Namely, milk, yogurt, butter, fish, meat, and dried meat are food. Furthermore, which monk means the group of six monks or others like them. Not being sick means except for being sick. For oneself means dedicated to oneself. Such food means milk, yogurt, butter, fish, meat, and dried meat. From other houses means from the houses of Brahmins and householders. Begging means requesting. Eating or swallowing means swallowing into the throat. Committing an offense of downfall.
