Thus he dwelt. At that time, a householder, with his own faith, having built and together with himself, allowed a monastery to be built, and offered it to the venerable Rāhula. Then, the venerable Rāhula stayed in that monastery for as long as he did, and then, taking his bowl and robes, went wandering. That householder heard that the venerable Rāhula stayed in that monastery for as long as he did, and then, taking his bowl and robes, went wandering. Having heard this, that householder offered that monastery to the Sangha. Then, the venerable Rāhula, dwelling in the Jītakavana, returned and, having heard this, besought the Blessed One: "Lord, how should I treat that monk?" He instructed: "Rāhula, go to where that householder is, and having arrived, say this to that householder: 'Householder, will you not slightly revile my body or speech?'" The venerable Rāhula spoke those words to that householder. He said: "Venerable Rāhula, I will not slightly revile your body or speech." Then, the venerable Rāhula reported to the Blessed One that the householder had spoken those words. Then, the Blessed One instructed the venerable Ānanda: "Ānanda, go and gather all the monks who dwell near the Vatsa Grove in the measuring house." The venerable Ānanda gathered them there and informed the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One went to that important measuring house, and having arrived, sat down on the seat prepared in the midst of the Sangha of monks. Having sat down, the Blessed One instructed the monks: "Monks, if someone gives a gift to one person, or two, or a great many, or the Sangha, and another gives a gift to one person, or two, or a great many, or the Sangha, that is not a gift in accordance with the Dharma, nor is it a reception in accordance with the Dharma, nor is it fit to be fully enjoyed. Monks, if someone divides the Sangha, making it into two factions, abiding separately in one side and the other, then,

If one gives to one side and does not give to the other, it is not a righteous giving, nor a righteous receiving, and it is not fit to be enjoyed. Monks, if someone gives to one person and does not give to one, two, or many others, or to the Sangha, it is a righteous giving, a righteous receiving, and it is fit to be fully enjoyed. Monks, if the Sangha is divided into two, existing as one side and the other, if one gives to one side and does not give to the other, it is a righteous giving, a righteous receiving, and it is fit to be enjoyed. Monks, therefore, the former is giving, and the latter is not. The king has power over the land, the owner has power over the dwelling, and the monk has power over the alms bowl and the Dharma robes. The giver and the donor should manifestly accumulate the Dharma to be given by themselves, and should not give their own things to others. Monks, give the monastery back to the monk possessed by Rahula. Those monks gave the monastery back to the venerable Rahula. This happened only for a while, and the Blessed One did not temporarily establish the basis of learning for the Shravakas for the sake of taming. The basis of the enactment is that the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling in Jeta's Grove in Shravasti, in the pleasure garden of Anathapindika. A mendicant persuaded a householder to take refuge and abide in the precepts, and praised the seven bases of meritorious deeds arising from wealth. The householder heard that the attendant had dedicated a piece of cloth to the Sangha of monks including the Buddha, so he had them transfer it to himself. After that, the householder invited the Sangha of monks including the Buddha to his house for a feast and showed the cloth to the elder, saying, "Please rejoice! Please rejoice!" Then he gave it to Ananda, and the meaning of the monk

Why do the monks reproach, saying that knowingly, one causes the gains dedicated to the Sangha to be transferred to oneself? They slander and speak harshly. At that time, the monks reported to the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One, because of this event, this origin, and this circumstance, convened the Sangha of monks, and beginning with Sudinna and others, reproached them in various ways. Having fully seen the ten benefits of establishing the precepts, he said, 'My hearers, this is how you should recite the basis for training in the Vinaya: If any monk knowingly causes the gains dedicated to the Sangha to be transferred to oneself, it is an offense entailing forfeiture.' The place where the precept was established was Sravasti. The person was Sudinna. The affliction was greed. The fault was causing the clothes dedicated by others to others to be transferred to oneself. Furthermore, 'any monk' means Sudinna, son of the Shakyas, or anyone else like him. 'To the Sangha' means to the Sangha of the Tathagata's hearers. 'Dedicated' means vowed. 'Gains' means two kinds of gains: gains of clothing and gains of food. Here, it is understood to refer to gains of clothing. 'Knowingly' means that one knows it oneself, or that others have told one. 'Causes to be transferred to oneself' means causes to be offered to oneself. 'It is an offense entailing forfeiture' means that one must abandon the object and confess the offense of downfall. Therefore, it is said to be an offense entailing forfeiture. How does a downfall occur? Here, one should understand the characteristics of this through the actual basis, the preparation, the differentiation of downfalls by the preparation of the preparation, the absence of downfall, what should be learned, and the remedies. Among these, the differentiation of the actual basis of downfall here is that if a monk knowingly transfers and obtains for himself the gains of clothing that a donor has dedicated to another monk or to the Sangha, it becomes the actual basis of an offense entailing forfeiture from the transferred dedication. An offense entailing forfeiture has occurred from the transfer of what was dedicated to a monk.
