That is, what is "lda"? It is the opposite of the former. The Blessed One allowed the acceptance of giving and taught that it could be eaten. The group of six accepted giving, and those who were not allowed to accept giving also ate. Therefore, for the monks with few desires, the Blessed One allowed the acceptance of giving and taught that it could be eaten. Why do the monks reproach those who are allowed to accept giving and those who are not allowed to accept giving for eating? They whip, they insult. At that time, the monks reported to the Blessed One. After that, the Blessed One, regarding this matter, this origin, at this time, gathered the Sangha of monks, rebuked the group of six, saying that this is not the behavior of a renunciate, it is not in accordance, it is not lawful, it is not in accordance with the rules, this is not what a renunciate should do, and rebuked them in various ways. Because he fully saw the ten benefits of establishing the training rules, my disciples should recite and study the basis of the Vinaya in this way: If any monk eats food swallowed from the mouth without being given, he commits a Patayantika offense. The place is Sravasti, the people are the group of six, the affliction is distraction from the teachings and training rules, and the fault is eating without being allowed to accept giving. The origin of the permission is that the Buddha, the Blessed One, was staying in Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Park in Sravasti. The monks living in the forest, because they did not have the strength to give water and toothpicks, abandoned their forest dwellings and entered the dwellings near the villages. The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, knowingly committed offenses, so the Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked the venerable Ananda, "Ananda, why have the monks living in the forest abandoned their forest dwellings and entered the dwellings near the villages?" The venerable Ananda reported the matter in detail, and the Blessed One taught, "Therefore, except for water and toothpicks." There were intelligent elephants, intelligent monkeys, and intelligent bears, and they offered fruits to the monks, and the monks regretted it.

From pure giving. The Blessed One said: Whoever has acceptance also has power. Therefore, those who have been given should be called accepted, and there should be no regret about this. Then, the Blessed One praised wanting to learn, respecting learning, and not being stingy with the things needed for learning, and spoke to the monks about teachings that were consistent with it, mostly the same, and in accordance with it. The Blessed One said to the monks: Monks, therefore, the former is prohibited, but this is now permitted. The hearers should recite the basis of learning in the Vinaya as follows: If a monk eats food that has not been given into his mouth, except for water and toothpicks, he commits a downfall. This is permitted. The place is Shravasti. The person is a monk, the owner of the monastery. There are no afflictions or faults. Among them, what is "monk"? It refers to the group of six or any other of their sons. What is "not given"? That is, whether male, female, or hermaphrodite, no one has given it. What is "food eaten from the mouth"? That is, the five kinds of hard food and the five kinds of soft food. What is "eating"? That is, swallowing into the throat. What is "except for water and toothpicks"? That is, except for water and toothpicks. What is "commits a downfall"? As before. So, how does a downfall occur? Here, the downfall is established through the main action, the preparatory action, and the preparatory action of the preparatory action, as well as the absence of downfall, what should be learned, and the remedies. The characteristics of these should be known. Among them, here the establishment of the downfall of the main action is that a monk, at a time when the northern sound is unpleasant, for edible things other than water and toothpicks, does not make a gesture of giving and receiving, but thinks that he has done so, and eats it in his mouth, then it becomes the main action of the downfall of eating without giving and receiving. If one does not bless at a time when the northern sound is unpleasant, there is no fault. If a monk is in a state where the northern sound is unpleasant, whether here or elsewhere, if he blesses at a time when the northern sound is unpleasant, even if he eats without giving and receiving, there is no downfall. Therefore, except for these situations, this downfall is established. Edible things other than water and toothpicks.
