The venerable Black Great One was entirely associated with the charnel ground. His alms bowl was from the charnel ground, his robes were from the charnel ground, his alms-gathering was from the charnel ground, and his dwelling was also in the charnel ground. When most people developed disgust for him, the venerable Black Great One became plump, with abundant skin, flesh, and blood, and he would not frequently enter the town for alms. When most people did not develop disgust for him, the venerable Black Great One became tall, weak, withered, emaciated, and without substance. He would frequently enter the town for alms. The gatekeeper, noticing this characteristic, thought, 'Does this venerable Black Great One not eat meat?' And everywhere the rumor spread, 'The venerable Black Great One does not eat meat.' In Śrāvastī, there lived a Brahmin who took a wife from his own caste. He would play with her, rejoice with her, and enjoy pleasure with her. They had a daughter who grew up to be a young woman. One day, the Brahmin passed away, and his relatives decorated the bier with blue, yellow, red, and white cloths. They carried him to the charnel ground, cremated him, and collected the ashes. His wife and daughter sat nearby, grieving. The venerable Black Great One saw them looking at his face, and the daughter said, 'Mother, this venerable Black Great One, like a blind crow, is surely spying on us.' She also spoke harsh words. In Śrāvastī, the Brahmin children heard that 'The venerable Black Great One does not eat meat.' To test him, they dressed up a corpse to resemble a dead person, smeared it with oil and ghee, placed it in a bier, and prepared to carry it out of Śrāvastī. At the same time, the venerable Black Great One was entering Śrāvastī for alms. He saw the bier and thought, 'I have entered the town for alms because of this insatiable desire. In any case, I will return and eat these five foods.' So he returned. The children threw the bier in the charnel ground, hid nearby, and made a commotion.
