If permission is not obtained because of carrying food for the journey? If there is no other food, it is permissible to eat the food that has been taken in hand, and there is no fault in that. If a monk is on a journey and there is no reason to carry food, he should beg from the patron. If there is nothing to carry, he should carry it himself. By giving the food that he has carried to others, he should exchange food and eat it. If that is not accomplished, then it should be eaten. If there is no power to give and receive, then the food that he has carried himself without giving and receiving, or other food, should be eaten. The two kinds of food that he has carried himself and that have not been given and received should also be eaten by the monk who has previously fasted for one day. The amount to be eaten is one handful on the first day, one handful on the second day, and on the third day he should eat as much as is enough, and there is no fault in that. If a monk has no food and is very hungry, then fruits and roots that have not been prepared, and things that have not been given and received, and things that have been taken in hand, may also be eaten at the wrong time. It is also permissible for him to pick, dig, and cook himself, and it is also permissible for him to have others do it, and there is no fault in that. If a monk has no food and is very hungry, and he wants to start doing things that are permissible, such as eating things that have not been given and received, that have not been prepared, and that are not at the wrong time, there is no fault in making a well-known intention if he hears an unpleasant sound. If leaves are used as vessels, there is no fault in not giving and receiving. For the use of leaves as vessels, there is no difference between those that have been cut and those that have not been cut from trees, etc., because they have been given and received. If there are cut leaves, use them. If there are no other cut leaves, use the uncut ones, and there is no fault in that. There is no downfall for the novice, the madman, the disturbed mind, and those who are afflicted by feelings. What is to be learned is that a monk should learn not to rely on all kinds of actions that lead to the downfall of accumulation in all places and at all times. Oily things such as pots should be made free of oil.

For this reason, fish, marmots, frogs, or baby crocodiles should be killed and placed in a deep pool of water, or left for fish-eating dogs to devour completely. Oily containers, such as bottles, can also be made oil-free by burning them. After being completely devoured and burned in this way, they should be washed with alkaline substances or heavy objects. Murky water should be shaken until it reflects the images of other objects. The fruit of the Kataka can make water very clear. Purifying agents can also make water very clear. Dough can also make water very clear. To prevent the dough from spoiling, it should be coated with oil. Items such as picked-up objects that have been discarded without attachment should not be picked up for consumption. Items such as picked-up objects that have been discarded without attachment should not be knowingly picked back up. If a monk does not have the burden of carrying provisions for the road, the patron should be willing to carry them for him. If it is not possible to make the patron willing, and there is no one to carry them, one should carry the provisions for the road oneself. By giving one's own provisions for the road to others, one exchanges provisions and allows others to eat. If a monk has no food and is very hungry, and there is no giving or receiving, or in cases of eating at the wrong time, etc., if one wants to do what is permissible, if one hears unpleasant northern sounds, one should remember one's reputation. If one's hands are wet or there are leaves, one should not drink water with a ladle. If there are none, one should not cover it. The lid of the ladle has three types: made of wood, made of stone, and made of earth, which should be held. The base of the ladle, whether made of wood or made of stone, should be held. The method of repair is the same as before. The thirty-eighth transgression of hoarding has been explained. The Extensive Commentary on the Pratimoksha Sutra, Collected from the Vinaya, Volume Twenty-Nine. The basis for the transgression of eating without being given is twofold: by enactment and by permission. The basis for the enactment is that the Buddha, the Bhagavan, was residing in Anathapindika's Grove in Jeta's Grove in Shravasti. At that time...
