When a monk is setting out to beg, as well as those other than sudden visitors, the sick, attendants of the sick, and those who have been appointed, as long as they practice brahmacharya, all those belonging to that monk or nun should not take their share from the kitchen and the common heap to eat until the meal has begun. If two or three monks are invited as guests, they should also not take from the kitchen and the common heap to eat. If a single monk resides in a monastery, he should also not eat anywhere other than the place where food is distributed. If a single monk is invited as a guest, he should also not take from the kitchen and the common heap to eat, unless designated by the patron. If a situation arises where one cannot attend the invitation, one should not accept the offered food unless the patron has relinquished it. Monks and nuns may eat together in the same distribution place. Subsequent modifications are the same as before. The thirty-sixth transgression concerning eating in assembly has been explained. The Extensive Commentary on the Pratimoksha Sutra, Collected from the Vinaya, Volume Eight. The basis for the transgression of eating at the wrong time is as follows: The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was residing in Anathapindika's Grove in Jeta's Grove in Shravasti. At that time, the Venerable Great Maudgalyayana's son, along with his close attendants and others, ordained and fully ordained a group of seventeen young men born in Sarpa. At that time, they put on their lower garments in the morning, carried their bowls and robes, and went to Shravasti to beg for alms. Because women are practitioners of desire, the women saw them and beat their breasts, saying: These men, which men were unable to fill their mouths with salt as soon as they were born, unable to dig a pit in the cradle, what have they gained by not being able to follow them? The group of seventeen became frightened and said: It is better for us to fast, it is not good to hear such unpleasant words, so they immediately returned and fasted. As long as the radiance of their bodies did not fade, they devoted themselves to virtuous practices, and when the radiance of their bodies faded

At that time, they would put down their clothes and sleep. Those who enjoyed the city gardens would take food and drink and go out of Shravasti to wander in the Jeta Grove. When they were eating and drinking, the groups of seventeen saw them and approached their bellies. Those people said, "Do the noble ones wish to eat?" "Yes, we do." Those people gave food and drink to the groups of seventeen. After they had enjoyed it, they walked together and began to recite. Nearsaw saw them reciting and said, "How wonderful! The groups of seventeen are very diligent!" Venerable Near, when the Blessed One is at ease, he will expound the Abhidharma. When a giver and a donor give food to a recipient, they are giving five things: they are giving life, giving complexion, giving strength, giving eloquence, and giving diligence, which will lead to happiness. This is well said, for if one eats, one will have eloquence, and if one does not eat, one will not have it. "Have you eaten?" "We have eaten." "Are you allowed to eat at the wrong time?" "If we cannot get it on time, are we to starve to death?" Saying this, the monks with few desires rebuked, "Why do the monks go and eat at the wrong time?" They reviled and insulted them. When they said these things, the monks reported it to the Blessed One. Then, because of this event, this origin, and this cause, the Blessed One convened the Sangha of monks and rebuked the groups of seventeen, saying, "This is not the conduct of a Shramana, it is not in accordance, it is not permissible, it is not in accordance with the rules, it is not something that a renunciate should do." He rebuked them in various ways, and because he saw the ten benefits of establishing the precepts, my Shravakas should recite the basis of learning in the Vinaya as follows: "If any monk goes or eats food at the wrong time, he commits a Patayantika offense." Thus he established the precept. The place was Shravasti, the people were the groups of seventeen, the affliction was an unbearable combination, and the fault was eating at the wrong time. Among them, the term "any monk" refers to
