One should squat down in front of that person and say these words: "Please listen, O virtuous one. I, a monk named so-and-so, have I abstained, completely perfected, and reached the ultimate? If there is a need to obtain food and edibles, please grant me the leftover food." After he has eaten two or three mouthfuls, he should say, "Please partake of what is yours." Some teachers say, "Please partake of what is yours as you please." If a monk has finished eating and has not renounced the food, and has not deviated from proper conduct, then he himself should eat two or three mouthfuls and leave the rest in that way. If a monk has finished eating and has renounced the food, or has deviated from proper conduct, then he should not eat it, but should give it to him with his hand and leave the rest in that way. If he eats it, he will commit a serious offense. If a monk thinks, "I will not eat other food from this day on," and having examined it in that way, renounces the food; or if he has not examined it in that way, but has renounced the food merely because he has deviated from proper conduct, then it is permissible to have him leave the rest. It should not be done with food that is not suitable for the time, or with food that is mixed with it. There are five reasons why it should be said that the food has not been left: outside the boundary, in a place where it cannot be obtained, from behind, from the armpit, and by causing him to deviate from proper conduct. The opposite of these five is said to be leaving the rest. Furthermore, there are five reasons why it should be said that the food has not been left: outside the boundary, in a place where it cannot be obtained, the bottom of the bowl, on the knees, and by causing him to deviate from proper conduct. The opposite of these five is said to be leaving the rest. "Leaving" means leaving and abandoning. The monk who leaves the food abandons the leftover food that has been eaten, which is called "leaving." The food left by one person can be eaten by many. Not doing it in the way that the manner of leaving the food has been shown above is called not leaving the food. Thus, the characteristics of a monk renouncing food and not leaving food have been shown. Now, the characteristics of classifying offenses will be shown. Monk

There is no fault in abandoning food itself. There is no fault in not leaving leftovers. It is both abandonment itself and not leaving leftovers, and there is no fault in having awareness of these and eating with hesitation. There is no fault in eating any of the five kinds of food that are suitable for the time and belong to the category of five kinds of food. There is no fault in eating and swallowing into the throat. Here, the transgression of eating a single meal is established by means of prohibition and permission. Therefore, if a monk abandons food itself, does not leave leftovers, and eats any food that is suitable for the time, it will become a transgression of eating a single meal. But if he eats after leaving leftovers, it is shown that there is no transgression. A monk who has perfectly taken the qualities of the practice of eating a single meal is a special deity arising from perfect acceptance, so whether he has abandoned it or not, once he has taken and eaten on a single seat, whether he takes it later or not, whether he leaves leftovers or not, he should not eat food and drink. If he eats, the deity will be broken. The agent here is mainly the one who has awareness of abandoning food itself and not leaving leftovers. For this, there are five limbs that lead to the root transgression: abandoning food itself, not leaving leftovers, having awareness of it, eating food suitable for the time, and eating. If these limbs are not complete, there will be faults accordingly. The transgression of preparation is a misdeed, and as long as one begins to prepare for the transgression of eating a single meal, until one does not reach the root, it is a misdeed. For the root, for each initial preparation, there is a misdeed. For what is not abandoning food itself and not leaving leftovers, if one thinks it is abandonment itself and leaving leftovers, or eats with hesitation, it is a misdeed. Getting angry from preparing food is a misdeed. Leaving leftovers, the food has been eaten, and one has not deteriorated from the practice of abandoning, if one eats one or two bites from the leftovers, it is a misdeed. The transgression of the preparation of preparation is a minor misdeed, and for as many preparations as there are, there are also preparations of preparation.
