The terms "given up" and "enough" should be understood as having been given up. The remaining five terms, namely "set aside for a while," "give to another for a while," "go away for a while," "eaten for a while," and "enough for a while," should be understood as not having been given up. The Blessed One had instructed that monks should not eat what has been given up. However, the group of six monks ate both what had been given up and what had not been given up. Some monks with few desires therefore rebuked them, saying: The Blessed One has instructed that monks should not eat what has been given up, so why do the monks eat both what has been given up and what has not been given up? They scolded, pointed fingers, and slandered them. The monks reported this matter to the Blessed One. Then, regarding this incident, this origin, and this cause, the Blessed One convened the monastic community of monks and rebuked the group of six monks, saying: This behavior is not in accordance with the way of a renunciate, is not in accordance, is not proper, is not in accordance with the rules, and is not something that those who have gone forth should do. The Blessed One condemned them in various ways, and having fully considered the ten benefits of establishing precepts, therefore my hearers should recite and study this basis of discipline as follows: If any monk, having already eaten, takes or eats food from what has been given up, he commits an offense entailing expiation. The Blessed One established this precept. The location was Shravasti, the individuals were the group of six monks, the afflictions were transgressing the training and disrespecting the Buddha's words, and the fault was eating what had been given up. The origin of establishing this precept is that the Buddha, the Blessed One, was residing in Anathapindika's Grove in Jeta's Grove in Shravasti. A patron invited the Buddha and the monastic community of monks to another house for a meal. At that time, there were many sick monks, and they had a lot of leftover food. After they themselves had eaten, they offered the leftover food to the sick monks who were full, but the sick monks were unable to eat it, and the sick monks also said that we had given it up, so we will not eat it. There were also no attendants or novices in the monastery, so they

In the garden, a large pile of food was placed, and when the crows were eating there, a loud crowing sound occurred. The Buddhas, the Bhagavat, knowingly cultivated, and the Buddha, the Bhagavat, said to the venerable Ananda: Ananda, what is the reason for the loud crowing sound occurring in the garden? The venerable Ananda reported the situation in detail. Then, the Bhagavat thought: In order for the monks to dwell in comfort, and in order for the donors to fully enjoy the food offered, I should allow leftover food. Thinking this, he said to the monks: Monks, therefore, it is permitted to eat leftover food. After the Bhagavat said that it was permitted to eat leftover food, the monks did not know how to handle the leftover food. The Bhagavat said: Monks, anyone who has finished eating and discarded, completely finished and thoroughly completed, if they find food or drink and want to eat, then that monk should wash their hands and accept it. Monks, anyone who has finished eating but has not discarded, and has not violated the code of conduct, or monks, anyone who has finished eating and discarded, but has not violated the code of conduct, should squat in front of him and say this: Venerable one, please listen. I, a monk, named so-and-so, want to find food or drink from the food that has been discarded, completely finished, and thoroughly completed. Please give me the leftover food. The monk who gives the leftover food, if he has finished eating but has not discarded, and has not violated the code of conduct, then he himself eats two or three mouthfuls, and then says: Here, please enjoy. This is how the leftover food is given. Monks, if he has finished eating and discarded, but has not violated the code of conduct, then he should not eat it, but put it in his hand, and then say: Here, please enjoy. This is how the leftover food is given. If he eats it, he will commit a serious offense. A person with causes should say that he has not given the leftover food.

What are the five? Outside the boundary, in an unobtainable place, from behind, from the armpit, causing behavior to degenerate. Having a cause is said to be remaining, what are the five? Not outside the boundary, in an obtainable place, not from behind, not from the armpit, causing behavior not to degenerate. Furthermore, with five causes it is said to be not remaining, what are the five? Outside the boundary, in an unobtainable place, at the bottom of the bowl, on the knees, causing behavior to degenerate. With five causes it is said to be should be remaining, what are the five? Not outside the boundary, in an obtainable place, not at the bottom of the bowl, not on the knees, a monk who does not cause behavior to degenerate, for many things that have become remaining, should eat, and should not regret this. Then, the Blessed One praised wanting to learn, respecting learning, and reducing the requisites for learning, and then spoke to the monks words of Dharma that were consistent with this, similar to this, and in accordance with this, and said to the monks: Monks, therefore, the former is a prohibition, and this is a permission, my disciples should recite the training ground of the Vinaya in this way: If any monk, having eaten food and abandoned it, accumulates without remaining, or eats, or chews, or swallows, he commits a downfall. The Blessed One made a permission. The place is Shravasti (Jetavana). The people are many internal affairs monks. Afflictions and faults are not present. Among them, the so-called "any monk" refers to the group of six monks or others like them. The so-called "having eaten food and abandoned it" means having completely finished and reached the end. The so-called "accumulating or eating" refers to the five kinds of accumulation and the five kinds of eating. The so-called "chewing or swallowing" means swallowing into the throat. The so-called "commits a downfall" means as before. So, how does a downfall occur? Here also there is the main action and the preparatory action, and the preparatory action of
