Regarding the precepts, receiving and consuming more than the measure of three alms bowls constitutes a downfall. This has five branches that lead to a fundamental downfall: the donor belongs to the human realm, whether a male or female householder; the offered alms have not been fully digested; the amount exceeds the measure of three medium-sized alms bowls; and it is received from a house, carried away, and consumed. If one of these branches is incomplete, then depending on the circumstances, there will be a rebuke. The downfall of association is an offense, namely, as long as one engages in the act of taking more than just three alms bowls' worth, from the beginning of the act that leads to a downfall until the completion of the main action, it is an offense. For each different act of association performed in relation to the main action, there is a corresponding offense. Offenses are committed against donors who are not human, such as Zama, Maning, and hermaphrodites. Offenses are committed against ordained individuals of the Bon tradition and outsiders. Offenses are committed against non-human beings. If an offense is committed against an animal, there will be a rebuke. Forcibly taking something is an offense. If one receives more alms than allowed, then the coloring of the association is an offense. Causing others to receive is an offense. Receiving something that is not edible is an offense. Until it is eaten, engaging in the act of receiving is an offense. The downfall of the association of association is a minor offense, namely, as many acts of association as there are, there are just as many associations of association; the association of the offense of association is also an offense, namely, a minor offense. Situations where there is no downfall: if it has been completely digested, and there is a need for strength or a need that accords with the Dharma, even if one takes a hundred alms bowls, there is no fault. If it is said, "Take as you wish," and it is consumed at will, there is no fault. If the prescribed amount is not exceeded, there is no fault. If one stays in the same place and eats as much as one wants, there is no downfall. Receiving and eating rice and other foods that have not been cooked or prepared does not constitute a downfall in this context. There is no downfall for beginners, the insane, those with disturbed minds, and those afflicted by painful feelings. What is to be learned: a bhikshu should, in all places and at all times, learn not to rely on any actions that would lead to the downfall of taking more than three alms bowls' worth. One should not forcibly take. If it is necessary to take more, then one should...

The bowls should be distributed. One should not hold a bowl that is excessively large, like a large container placed on a stove's tripod, like a stove utensil. The method of correction is the same as before. Taking more than three bowls' worth, this is the thirty-third downfall, which has been explained. The Extensive Commentary on the Pratimoksha Sutra, Collected from the Vinaya, Volume Twenty-Seven. The basis for the downfall of eating a single meal is twofold, due to the establishment and permission. The basis for the establishment is that the Buddha, the Bhagavan, was residing in Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Garden in Shravasti. Then, the Bhagavan addressed the monks, saying: "Monks, I am one who eats a single meal. Because I eat a single meal, I live with a clear mind, peacefully, with few harms, little fear, light movement, possessing sustenance and strength, happily, without fault, and experiencing a pleasant dwelling. Monks, come here and eat a single meal. When you eat a single meal, you will live with a clear mind, peacefully, with few harms, little fear, light movement, possessing sustenance and strength, happily, without fault, and experiencing a pleasant dwelling." Without abandoning food, one should eat as much as is enough, and having started eating, one should not rise even if one sees a teacher, preceptor, lama, or someone like a lama. The five plants—root, stem, leaf, flower, and fruit—will not cause one to abandon the meal. The five foods—rice, hot porridge, meat, oil cakes, and tsampa—will cause one to abandon the meal. The five reasons—having food, having the strength of food, having started eating, having abandoned food, and having improper conduct—should be said to have caused abandonment. The five reasons—not having food, not having the strength of food, not having started eating, not having abandoned food, and not having improper conduct—should be said not to have caused abandonment. Furthermore, the five phrases without remainder: saying "Throw it away," saying "Give it to another," saying "Go away," saying "It is finished eating."
