Through combination, the classification of transgressions, as well as non-transgressions, what should be learned, and remedies, one should understand the characteristics here. Among them, the classification of fundamental transgressions here is that if a bhikkhu, during a fast and without making a remainder, eats any suitable food, it becomes the basis for a transgression of single-seat food. If a bhikkhu, during a fast and without making a remainder, eats any suitable food, then what is said to be the basis here? What is the remainder? It should be said that what is called fasting is when a bhikkhu, having started eating, abandons the place where he was staying. That is, due to five reasons, namely having food, having the power of food, starting to eat, fasting, and falling from conduct, one will abandon the place where one was staying due to starting to eat. A bhikkhu stays in a place where he has started eating, starts eating five kinds of hard food and five kinds of soft food, and even takes a little bit of salt or anything else that can be eaten, and starts eating, because there is food, there is the power of food, and he has started eating, so, apart from soup and porridge among the five kinds of hard food, for the five kinds of soft food that are suitable and unsuitable and not mixed, the power of receiving food is not stopped immediately. When a bhikkhu is receiving food, standing on the side where he can obtain food, without extra words, saying any of the five statements "put down", "give to others", "go away", "finished eating", "enough", thereby abandoning the power of receiving food, abandoning the place where he was previously staying when he started eating, this is fasting and falling from conduct, which is called fasting. Here, due to five reasons, one will not abandon the place where one was staying due to starting to eat, namely not having food, not having the power of food, not having started eating, not fasting, and not falling from conduct. The five statements with remaining words will not abandon the power of receiving food, namely "put down temporarily", "give to others temporarily", "go away temporarily", "finished eating temporarily"

And, phrases like 'it is enough for now'. Abstaining from five kinds of plants, porridge, and yogurt does not constitute fasting. The five kinds of plants are roots, stems, leaves, flowers, and fruits. Porridge is defined as the kind where, if a stirrer is placed in it, the stirrer cannot stand upright. Yogurt is defined as the kind where, if five fingers are placed on it, the marks do not show. Giving food disrespectfully also does not constitute fasting. Giving food disrespectfully means that if someone intends to give food to a monk with a disrespectful attitude, it is not genuine giving. If the monk knows this, saying any of the following five phrases without any remainder—'throw it away,' 'give it to someone else,' 'go away,' 'it is finished,' 'it is enough'—does not constitute fasting. Abstaining from the five kinds of food, unsuitable food, and unmixed food constitutes fasting. The five kinds of food are rice, warm tsampa, meat, fried pastries, and dumplings. Unsuitable and unmixed food refers to those that have not been given and received, contain rancid butter, have been processed, cooked by a monk, become stored, the meat of single-hoofed animals, unmixed with human flesh, and so on. Giving food disrespectfully also constitutes fasting. Giving food disrespectfully refers to nuns, female novices, male novices, female novices, laymen, laywomen, and others who are allowed to give food, guiding them in obtaining food without a disrespectful intention. 'Without making it extra'—how does one make it extra? If a monk has finished eating and renounced the food, completely finished and reached the end, and someone finds plants or food and wants to eat, then the monk should wash both hands and give and receive. If a monk has finished eating but has not renounced the food and has not deviated from the conduct, or if a monk has finished eating and renounced the food but has not deviated from the conduct.
