Having condemned in various ways with the name "not an action," having fully seen the ten benefits of establishing the precepts, my Shravaka disciples should recite the basis of learning the Vinaya in this way: Many monks go to the houses for alms. If those Brahmins and faithful donors offer flour and food many times, if desired, those monks should take two or three full bowls. If they take more than that, it is a downfall. After taking two or three full bowls, they should go to the outer monastery and distribute it to the monks who are staying there. We ourselves should also eat, therefore this is established as a ritual. The place is Shravasti. The persons are the group of six. The affliction is the desire for food. The occasion is taking three medium-sized bowls of food that the faithful have not completely given away, food that has not been disposed of as they please, after begging. Taking more than that. Among them, the term "monk" refers to the group of six. The term "many" refers to more than two. The term "houses" refers to the houses of Brahmins and donors. The term "going" means going to. The term "if to those" refers to those monks. Brahmins and faithful donors, "faithful" means having true faith in the Buddha, having true faith in the Dharma and Sangha, taking refuge in the Buddha, taking refuge in the Dharma and Sangha. The term "flour" refers to flour and roasted flour. The term "food" refers to meals. The term "offered many times" means offered again and again. The term "if desired" means if it is needed. The term "those monks" refers to any monk. "Should take two or three full bowls," there are three types of bowls: large, medium, and small. Among them, the large bowl is, if you put in ground dry Ga fruit, rice porridge, a small Magadha (摩揭陀) measure of cooked food, plus beans and vegetables, only the edge of the bowl, the amount of the thumb does not touch the food. The medium bowl is half a small measure of cooked food like that. The small bowl is a small measure.

That's how it's cooked. One small Magadha breu is sixteen Magadha srang of dried fine rice, and one Magadha srang is equal to two Tibetan srang. One small Magadha breu of dried fine rice is thirty-two Tibetan srad. If calculated in phul measurements, it is seven phul do and one khyor. One Magadha srang is half a small breu do, and the Tibetan seven phul is half and four more. Two Magadha small breu is equal to four Tibetan seven phul and one khyor do. Dried fine rice is calculated as three times after being cooked into chan. Thus, a large bowl is filled with cooked fine rice, four Tibetan seven phul and one khyor do, plus a bre do of vegetables, and it is not filled by one thumb's width. A medium bowl is filled with cooked fine rice, four and a half Tibetan seven phul, plus half a bre do more of vegetables, and it is not filled by one thumb's width. A small bowl is filled with cooked fine rice, one Tibetan seven phul and one khyor, plus one bre of vegetables, and it is not filled by one thumb's width. The edge of the bowl's mouth refers to the corner of the mouth where water can be absorbed. One thumb's width refers to the width of one thumb, from one corner of the first joint of the thumb wrapped around to the other corner. Here, it is allowed to take two or three full bowls, which means less than three, take as much as you want. Regarding the establishment of downfall, it is related to the amount of the medium bowl. The amount of rice in a medium bowl, half a bre do more, is dried fine rice, equal to half a do more of a Magadha small shengdou. The amount of rice in three medium bowls, five and a half bre, is dried fine rice, equal to half a do more of a Magadha small shengdou. Less than this amount can be taken as desired, but if more than this amount is taken, it will become a downfall. Here it says that if a monk accepts alms exceeding five and a half shengdou, he will commit a downfall in all cases.
