Then, (the Sangha) went to Shravasti (Nyaman yod, an ancient Indian city). The monks stayed with the Venerable Shariputra and asked the attendants: How do the Venerable Ones live in comfort? Are the Venerable Ones slightly comfortable? Are they slightly suffering? What makes them comfortable? The abbot did so many things to tame (others), that made them comfortable. What makes them suffer? When the abbot was sick, he shielded himself with an umbrella and left that rock, that made them suffer. When they said this, the monks reported to the Blessed One. The Blessed One taught: Therefore, except for being sick, monks are allowed to cut off (the clothes) below the knees. After that, the Blessed One praised the behavior of wanting to learn, respecting learning, and reducing learning supplies. The Blessed One gave the monks teachings of Dharma that were corresponding to this, mostly related to this, and in accordance with this, and instructed the monks: Monks, therefore, the previous one was prohibited, and this one is now permitted. My Shravaka disciples should proclaim the root of learning in this way: 《A monk who stays overnight in the same place, if not sick, should eat one meal of alms. If he eats more than one, he commits a transgression.》 Thus, permission was granted. The location is Shravasti, the person is the Venerable Shariputra, and there are no afflictions or faults. Among them, "staying overnight in the same place" refers to staying overnight in a place of non-Buddhists. "Monk" refers to a person who believes in this Dharma. "Not sick" refers to except for being sick. "Should eat one meal of alms" refers to eating one meal. "If he eats more than one" refers to if he eats more than once. "Committing a transgression" is the same as before. So, how does a transgression arise? Here, too, one must understand the characteristics here by distinguishing transgressions, non-transgressions, what should be learned, and remedies through the main action, the preparatory action, and the preparatory action of the preparatory action. Among them, here, distinguishing the transgression of the main action is: a monk who is not sick, who is not a believer in this Dharma, himself...

If a monk stays overnight in a non-Buddhist dwelling, including laypeople, and eats the next day's alms without the permission of the donor, then it becomes the basis for the root downfall of eating in the dwelling. For a monk who is not sick, there is no fault. For a dwelling that is not of this Dharma, there is no fault. For the owner of that dwelling, including laypeople, there is no fault. For that dwelling being of non-Buddhists, there is no fault. There, if a monk eats one alms on the first day and spends one night, there is no fault in eating the second day's alms. There is no fault in the second day's alms not being given by the donor. There is no fault in anything belonging to the five kinds of food. If the second day's alms are eaten without the donor's permission, there is no fault in the eating itself. The agent here is a monk who is not sick, who has not been given permission by the donor, who is not of this Dharma, the non-Buddhist dwelling, the owner including laypeople is the agent himself. Here, six limbs cause the root downfall: a monk who is not sick, not given permission by the donor, the dwelling not being of this Dharma and being of another non-Buddhist, the owner including laypeople, the monk having eaten food and spent one night, and eating the second day's alms. If those limbs are not complete, then there is a fault as appropriate. The downfall of action is a misdeed, as long as the action of the downfall of eating in the dwelling is undertaken until the root is not reached, it is a misdeed. For each different action undertaken for the root, there is one misdeed. There, having eaten on the first day, residing between the second day, not having eaten the second day's alms, is a misdeed. If that dwelling has no owner, the owner is a renunciate, the owner is a non-Buddhist, the owner is a relative, it is a misdeed. Having taken alms from another on the second day and eaten it in that dwelling, it is a misdeed. On the second day, having eaten other than food, such as chewing, drinking, licking, etc., it is a misdeed. Food is that which belongs to the five kinds of food. The action of the action
