Therefore, my Shravaka disciples should declare the basis for learning the Vinaya as follows: A Bhikshu who stays overnight in the same dwelling should accept only one alms-meal. If he takes more than that, it is a Patayantika offense. The location is Shravasti (Mnyan-yod). The individuals are the Group of Six Bhikshus. The afflictions are desire and strife. The offense is staying overnight in the same dwelling and eating more than one alms-meal. The occasion for the allowance is that the Buddha Bhagavan was residing in Anathapindika's Grove in Jeta's Grove in Shravasti (Mnyan-yod). Then, a merchant from Shravasti (Mnyan-yod) took his goods and went to that mountain village, entering the kitchen of that householder. The householder of the mountain village again began to distribute food to the naked ascetics. He did not send anyone to the merchant from Shravasti (Mnyan-yod), but instead called out to his friends, the almsgivers, saying, "Come here, come and eat!" The merchant from Shravasti (Mnyan-yod) was a faithful man, and he thought, "These must be the Shravaka disciples of the Bhagavan." So he went there. When he saw that those naked ascetics were shameless people, he thought, "To speak unpleasant words to their faces is painful." So he sat there without saying anything. After those naked ascetics had eaten and left, the householder of the mountain village said to the merchant from Shravasti (Mnyan-yod), "Friend, is the seed good, and is the field good?" He said, "Friend, the seed is good, but the field is the naked ascetics, who are shameless, hold wrong views, are like a charnel ground, and are utterly wicked land." The householder said, "Friend, are there any other good fields?" He said, "Yes, the Shravaka disciples of the Bhagavan." The householder said, "Friend, do not even mention them to me." He said, "Have they come here?" "Who are they?" "The Group of Six Bhikshus." "What have they been doing?" "They have been doing this and that." He said, "Friend, you have taken wish-fulfilling jewels from the great ocean!" The householder said, "Are there any other good Shravaka disciples of the Bhagavan?" He said, "Yes. If you could see the venerable Shariputra and the great Maudgalyayana, etc."

If you see rafts, non-returners, and other great disciples of the Blessed One, you will have great faith, there is such a place. The householder said: If they come here, I will provide them with the necessities for begging. The merchant of Shravasti thought: Now I should go and inform the Blessed One. So, the merchant sold his goods, collected the price, and went to Shravasti. He bowed his head to the feet of the Blessed One and reported: Venerable, in such and such a mountain rock, there is such and such a householder who provides lodging for the monks and Brahmins of the four directions. Whoever lives there, he provides them with the necessities for begging. If he could see the disciples of the Blessed One, then the Blessed One, out of compassion for him, if he could send some monks, that would be good. The Blessed One did not say anything to the householder, indicating his consent. Then, the Blessed One thought: Which monk will be able to subdue that householder with his retinue, and the crowd of people living in that mountain rock? He saw that the monk Shariputra was able to subdue them. Then, the Blessed One said to the venerable Shariputra: Shariputra, you should go to such and such a mountain rock, for the sake of such and such a householder with his retinue, and the crowd of people living in that mountain rock. The venerable Shariputra replied: Venerable, I will follow the teachings of the Blessed One. After hearing the teachings of the Blessed One, he went with five hundred attendants to the place where that mountain rock was located. Gradually traveling and walking, he arrived at that mountain rock and entered the householder's residence. When the householder heard this, he went there, bowed his head to the feet of the venerable Shariputra, and sat down on one side. After sitting down on one side, the venerable Shariputra correctly taught the householder with words in accordance with the Dharma, made him correctly understand, made him correctly uplift his spirits, and made him very happy. In many ways, he correctly taught with words in accordance with the Dharma, and made him correctly understand.
