Then the Blessed One instructed, "A capable monk should be appointed to teach these." The monks followed accordingly. In Rajagriha, there lived a householder who took a wife from a family of equal status, and he would play with her, rejoice with her, and enjoy pleasures together. Later, they had a son. He said to his wife, "Good woman, we have a son who can inherit our wealth and enjoyments, so I will take goods and go into the great ocean." The prince's mother said, "Do so." So he took goods and entered the great ocean, but there he suffered because of improper conduct. That woman, with the strength of her relatives and her own strength, nurtured and raised the child, and had him taught letters and characters. That child became very skilled in worldly stories. One day, that child went with Neu-dan to the Bright Garden and entered the monastery. He saw a five-part wheel painted in the doorway and asked the monk, "Venerable, what is this?" The monk explained its history in detail. The child, wanting to be reborn as a god, said, "Venerable, what deeds should I do so that I may be reborn as a god?" The monk replied, "There is a way to have a beautiful appearance." The child asked, "Venerable, what is that way?" The monk replied, "The way to have a beautiful appearance is to renounce in the presence of the Blessed One and practice celibacy for as long as you live. If you cannot do that, then in the presence of the Blessed One, take the five precepts of celibacy for as long as you live. If you cannot do that, then offer food to the Sangha of monks, headed by the Buddha, and you will be reborn among the gods." That child did not have the wealth of a Karshapana, so he agreed to work as a servant for a merchant and a captain, earned Karshapanas, and then invited the Sangha of monks, headed by the Buddha, to a feast. The group of six monks asked, "In whose house is the Sangha of monks, headed by the Buddha, invited?" The answer was, "It is the son of a certain householder." The group of six monks said, "He is a servant, what can he offer? Who has eaten the summer food in the house of the patron?"

Those called "'dong po" entered the houses of the patrons, and they said: "Holy ones, please be seated for a moment." They replied: "Let it be so." There they ate a child, and marked the place where the child's remains were. Previously, in another house, they had eaten a child, and because they were filled with fear, they respectfully did not eat, which the child saw. Having seen this, the child said to the Bhagavan: "Bhagavan, if there is a holy one here who respectfully does not eat, I think I will not be reborn among the gods." The Bhagavan said: "Fair-faced one, even with the enjoyment of dwelling places alone, you will be reborn among the gods, what need is there to mention the enjoyment of food?" Then, the Bhagavan correctly taught that son of the patron with teachings in accordance with the Dharma, caused him to correctly grasp it, caused him to correctly uplift himself, and caused him to correctly rejoice. In many ways, he correctly taught with teachings in accordance with the Dharma, caused him to correctly grasp it, correctly uplifted him, and having caused him to correctly rejoice, he rose from his seat and departed. At that time, about five hundred merchants arrived in Rajagriha (Rajgir, a city in Bihar) from the great ocean, and because there was a festival in Rajagriha, they could not find even a little food, and they were all hungry. They heard that the child had offered food to the Sangha of monks, including the Buddha, in the house of that merchant, so they came there and began to buy the leftover food. The child, without asking for payment, satisfied them all with food. Those merchants were delighted and also gave the child many precious jewels. At that time, a merchant in Rajagriha who had no son died when the time came. Wealthy people, merchants, and captains gathered together, and knowledgeable people asked: "Whom should we appoint as the chief merchant of the city?" After asking the four great non-humans, the result fell upon that child. That child was appointed as the chief merchant of the city. That merchant also thought: "This sentient being is fortunate and powerful, I should try to win him over," so he adorned his daughter with all kinds of ornaments and gave her to that chief merchant of the city as his wife, and she entered his house.
