Please show me the path of magical power. Then, the Blessed One, understanding that Devadatta had such a sinful thought, said: Son of Gautama, you should strive to cultivate higher morality, higher mind, and higher wisdom, and you will gain magical powers and other abilities. Then, Devadatta thought: The Blessed One is not showing me the path of magical power. Realizing this, he bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One, and then left the presence of the Blessed One and went to the venerable Ajnata Kaundinya. Arriving there, he said to the venerable Ajnata Kaundinya: Venerable one, please show me the path of magical power. Then, the venerable Ajnata Kaundinya also observed the mind of the Blessed One, and also realized that Devadatta had such a sinful thought, and said to Devadatta: Devadatta, you should properly attend to form, feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness, and you will gain magical powers and other abilities. Then, Devadatta thought: The venerable Ajnata Kaundinya is also not showing me the path of magical power. Realizing this, he went to the venerable Ashvajit, Bhadra, Vashpa, Mahanama, Sravana, Purna, Vimala, Gavampati, Subahu, and other five hundred elders. Arriving there, he said to the five hundred elders: Venerable ones, please show me the path of magical power. Then, the five hundred elders also observed the minds of the Blessed One and the venerable elders, and also realized that Devadatta had such a sinful thought, and said to Devadatta: Devadatta, you should properly attend to form, feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness, and you will gain magical powers and other abilities. Then, Devadatta thought: The five hundred elders also

He does not show the path of miraculous powers. Thus, these venerable ones had previously consulted with the Blessed One in truth. Therefore, if no one shows me the path of miraculous powers, I wonder, who else could show me the path of miraculous powers? At that time, the venerable Upagupta, the one with the ten powers, was dwelling in the Stekana-ma cave in Rajagriha. Then, Devadatta thought to himself: This venerable Upagupta, the one with the ten powers, has been unwavering, unfeigned, upright, and of an upright nature for a long time, and he is also the Khenpo of my elder brother Ananda. He is capable of showing me the path of miraculous powers. Having thought thus, Devadatta went to the venerable Upagupta, the one with the ten powers, and upon arriving, he bowed his head at the feet of the venerable Upagupta, the one with the ten powers, and sat to one side, saying: Venerable one, please show me the path of miraculous powers. Then, the venerable Upagupta, the one with the ten powers, without regard for the intentions of the Blessed One and the monks and venerable ones, and the sinful desires that arose in Devadatta, showed Devadatta the path of miraculous powers. Then, Devadatta, without sleeping in the upper and lower parts of the night, diligently practiced and, relying on the first dhyana, realized miraculous powers through worldly means, so that he could become many from one, and become one from many. With knowledge and vision, he could also experience the visible and the invisible. His body could pass unhindered through walls, fences, and mountains, just like a bird flying in the sky. He could also emerge from the ground, like a bird diving into water. He could also walk on water without sinking, just like walking on the great earth. He could also walk in the sky in a lotus position, just like a flying bird. He could also emit smoke, and he could also ignite flames, just like a great pile of fire. A great stream of water could flow from his body, just like a great cloud. He could also touch these two, the sun and the moon, with his hand.

Thus, with such great miraculous power, such great strength, and such great splendor, he even touched and fondled with his hands. Then Devadatta thought to himself: What should I do to be like those monks who have attained miraculous powers? Which leader should I follow in this land of Magadha? If I follow a leader in this land of Magadha, I can easily have many people follow me as well. Which leader should I follow? Then Devadatta thought to himself: The young King Ajatashatru, after his father's death, will become the master of his father's kingdom, power, and wealth. I should follow the young Ajatashatru, and once I follow him, I can easily have many people follow me as well. Then Devadatta transformed himself into a powerful baby elephant of noble lineage, entered the house of the young Ajatashatru through the door, came out through the window, entered through the window, and came out through the door. He transformed himself into a powerful, well-bred foal, entered the house of the young Ajatashatru through the door, came out through the window, entered through the window, and came out through the door. Then he transformed himself into a shaven-headed monk wearing brown robes, entered the house of the young Ajatashatru through the door, came out through the window, entered through the window, and came out through the door. The young Ajatashatru thought: Alas, this must be the venerable Devadatta. Then Devadatta transformed himself into a young boy with a golden necklace, frolicking and playing in the lap of the young Ajatashatru, and the young Ajatashatru embraced him, kissed him, hugged him tightly, and even spat on him. In this way, Devadatta was overwhelmed by fame and respect, and his mind was completely consumed, to the point of losing himself. The young Ajatashatru thought again: Alas, this must be the venerable Devadatta.
