Thereafter, the young Ajatasatru thought, "Alas! The venerable Devadatta is even more miraculous than the teacher." Thus, he developed a vast sinful view and gained faith in him. Because of his faith, he began to do things for Devadatta. Every morning and evening, he would come with an entourage of about five hundred chariots to attend to him. He would also prepare food for him, cooking about five hundred kinds of dishes in vessels, offering them plate by plate. Devadatta would also arrange for about five hundred monks to dine together. Then, many monks, in the early morning, would put on their robes, carry their bowls and Dharma robes, and go to Rajagriha for alms, and they heard that Devadatta had received such gains and respect. After hearing this, they also went for alms in Rajagriha, and after doing the work of eating, they would not go for alms in the afternoon, but would put down their Dharma robes and bowls, wash their feet, and go to where the Blessed One was, prostrate themselves at the feet of the Blessed One, and then withdraw to one side, and report to the Blessed One in detail about hearing that Devadatta had received such gains and respect. The Blessed One said, 'Monks, you should not rejoice in the gains and respect of Devadatta.' Why is that? Because the gains and respect of Devadatta will lead to killing and suppression. Monks, just as trees with ripe aquatic fruits, the ripeness of light and reeds, and pregnant she-mules, lead to killing and suppression, so too the gains and respect of Devadatta will lead to killing and suppression. Monks, the more Devadatta receives such gains and respect, the longer it will become meaningless, harmful, and painful for that foolish person. Monks, therefore you should train yourselves in this way: You should suppress gains and respect, and not be satisfied in mind by the occurrence of gains and respect.'

Do not rely on and dwell in it. Monks, you should train yourselves in this way. Then, Devadatta, being overwhelmed by gain and respect, and with his mind completely occupied, had this sinful desire arise: 'Now the Blessed One is old and infirm, and it is tiring for him to instruct the four assemblies. Alas, if the Blessed One would entrust the Sangha of monks to me, I could completely lead the Sangha of monks, and the Blessed One could also strive to live happily in this life and dwell in peace.' As soon as he had such a thought, his miraculous powers completely disappeared. Although they completely disappeared, he did not realize that he had completely lost his powers. At that time, the Blessed One's disciple, the son of Kaundinya, the virtuous monk Noka, practiced the pure conduct in the presence of the Blessed One, cultivated the four abodes of Brahma, and abandoned desire for sensual pleasures. By dwelling in them for a long time, he was born in accordance with the world of Brahma. At that time, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana was dwelling in the terrible grove, the abode of wild animals, on the mountain where the ogre kills children, near the village of the wicked outcast. Then, Brahma Noka, having realized that Devadatta had completely fallen from his miraculous powers, just as a strong man extends his arm from bending it, or bends it from extending it, disappeared from the world of Brahma and stood before the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana, saying: 'Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana, please be aware that Devadatta, being overwhelmed by gain and respect, and with his mind completely occupied, had this sinful desire arise: "Now the Blessed One is old and infirm, and it is tiring for him to instruct the four assemblies. Alas, if the Blessed One would entrust the Sangha of monks to me, I could completely lead the Sangha of monks, and the Blessed One could also strive to live happily in this life and dwell in peace."

Thinking that it might disappear because of this, as soon as such a thought arose, his magical power completely disappeared. Even if it completely disappeared, he would not realize that he had completely disappeared. The venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana should go to where the Blessed One is and report this matter in detail to the Blessed One. The venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana accepted without saying anything to Brahmā Wrong View. Then, Brahmā Wrong View, knowing that the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana had accepted without saying anything, bowed to the feet of the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana with his head and immediately disappeared. Then, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana, knowing that Brahmā Wrong View had left not long ago, just as he had settled his mind, for example, just as a strong man would bend his arm or stretch it out, or stretch it out and bend it, he immediately disappeared and dwelt in such a samādhi in the Bamboo Grove Kalandaka's residence in Rajagriha. Then, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana went to where the Blessed One was, and upon arriving, bowed to the feet of the Blessed One with his head, sat down to one side, and reported in detail to the Blessed One all the things that had happened in the conversation with Brahmā Wrong View. The Blessed One said: Maudgalyāyana, you first knew the mind of Devadatta with your mind, and then did Brahmā Wrong View say anything? He reported: Venerable One, yes. While the Blessed One was speaking these words with the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana, Devadatta's four companion monks, Kokālika, Khaṇḍadhamma, Kaṭamorakatishya, and Samudradatta, went together to where the Blessed One was. The Blessed One saw Devadatta from afar and said to the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana: Mahāmaudgalyāyana, Devadatta is coming, that foolish man will prophesy himself before me, now guard your words.
