Since the magical power is so great, the power should also be so great. However, Devadatta and his retinue have divided my Sangha, separating the Sangha, and such rumors will spread far and wide in all directions. They said: Devadatta, we cannot do that. Why? Because among the Buddha's Shravaka disciples, those who have great magical powers, have the divine eye, and can know the minds of others, they can see both far and near. Their minds have pervaded our minds, and their thoughts completely understand us, so they will know us humble people. Devadatta said: Friends, there will always be a way. They asked: What is that way? Come, let us offer all kinds of supplies to the elder monks, and prepare a feast of Dharma and wealth for the young monks. Devadatta said: If there is such a way, then let's do it. After that, Devadatta pretended to divide the Sangha. The elder monks immediately realized that Devadatta was pretending to divide the Sangha, so the monks reported the matter to the Buddha. After that, the Buddha said to the monks: Monks, you must first admonish Devadatta and others like him. Admonish them like this: Venerable Devadatta, do not pretend to divide the Sangha. Do not initiate disputes that will lead to division, and do not cling to this. Venerable Devadatta, you should be in harmony with the Sangha. The Sangha is in harmony and undivided, everyone is happy, there is no dispute, the opinions are the same, like water and milk mixed together, able to promote the teachings of the teacher, and can abide in happiness. Venerable Devadatta, abandon this act of dividing the Sangha. Monks, you should admonish them like this.

After saying "Act according to the teaching," the Blessed One's attendant first admonished Devadatta. The monks admonished him, but he stubbornly adhered to his own views, tenaciously believing that "Only this is true, all else is false," and subsequently named it. When this occurred, the monks reported to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One instructed: Monks, you should admonish Devadatta and others like him with entreaties and the four acts. The admonishment should be done as follows: After preparing the dwelling place and striking the bell, Admonish the monks truthfully with words of inquiry. When the entire Sangha has gathered and is in harmony, one monk should make a request and then act. The action should be done as follows: In the assembly, one should say: Venerable ones, please listen. This monk, Devadatta, is being deceitful in order to divide the harmony of the Sangha, initiating and holding onto disputes that will lead to division. If many monks admonish him, even if many monks admonish him, he stubbornly adheres to his own views, tenaciously believing that "Only this is true, all else is false," and subsequently names it. If the Sangha deems it timely and appropriate, please allow the Sangha. The Sangha should tell Devadatta: Venerable Devadatta, do not be deceitful in order to divide the harmony of the Sangha, do not initiate and hold onto disputes that will lead to division. Venerable Devadatta, you should bring harmony to the Sangha, the Sangha should be harmonious and undivided, everyone should be joyful, there should be no disputes, opinions should be unified, like water and milk mixed together, clarifying the Teacher's teachings, and abiding in the truth. Venerable Devadatta, you should abandon this kind of action that divides the Sangha. This is the request, the four acts should be done as follows: Venerable ones, please listen. This monk, Devadatta, is being deceitful in order to divide the harmony of the Sangha, initiating div

If many monks admonish and reconcile this dispute that turns into a contention, but still cling to that root, being extremely stubborn and manifestly attached, and then define it by saying, "Only this is true, the others are false." Therefore, the Sangha said to Devadatta, "Venerable Devadatta, please do not be stubborn in order to divide the harmony of the Sangha. Do not grasp and insist on the dispute that leads to division. Venerable Devadatta, please be in harmony with the Sangha. The Sangha is in harmony, not divided, everyone is happy, there is no dispute. The views are consistent, the voices are consistent, like water and milk blending together. If you can promote the teachings of the Teacher, you can abide in happiness. Venerable Devadatta, please abandon this root that leads to the division of the Sangha." If reconciliation is made with exhortation and four karmas, then, which venerable one can tolerate the Sangha using exhortation and four karmas to reconcile Devadatta, please remain silent. Whoever cannot tolerate it, please speak up. This is the first statement of karma. Similarly, repeat the second and third times. After the Sangha has tolerated and allowed it, the Sangha will use exhortation and four karmas to reconcile Devadatta. Because no one speaks like this, it is considered approved. The monks said, "Venerable ones, we will follow the Buddha's teachings." After hearing the teachings of the Blessed One, they used exhortation and four karmas to reconcile Devadatta. Even if reconciliation is made with exhortation and four karmas, he still clings to that root, being extremely stubborn and manifestly attached, and then defines it by saying, "Only this is true, the others are false." His accomplices, the four who followed the monks who spoke inconsistently, namely Kokalika, Khandadeva, Katamorakatishya, and Samudradatta, also said to the monks, "Venerable ones, whether you are good or bad, do not say anything to this monk. What is the reason for that? Venerable ones, this monk is a speaker of the Dharma, a holder of the Vinaya, this monk has correctly received the Dharma and the Vinaya."
