The great son Maudgalyayana paid homage to the two feet of the Blessed One, and by the power of manifesting magical abilities, he disappeared from there and returned to his own abode. Then, Devadatta went to where the Blessed One was, and upon arriving, he bowed his head to the two feet of the Blessed One and sat down on one side. He then said to the Blessed One: "Now, the Blessed One is old and frail, and teaching the four assemblies will be tiring. It would be good if the Blessed One would entrust the community of monks to me. I will completely guide the community of monks, and the Blessed One can also devote himself to living happily in this life, and his mind will be more at ease." The Blessed One said: "You foolish person, what are you saying? I would not entrust the community of monks even to those who practice the pure life like Shariputra and Maudgalyayana, how could I entrust it to you, who are like rotten food and eat saliva?" Then, Devadatta thought to himself: "The Blessed One praises Shariputra and Maudgalyayana, but says that I am like rotten food and eat saliva, this is a great insult to me." Thus, Devadatta initially developed great anger, displeasure, and distrust towards the Blessed One. Then, Devadatta said: "Stay!" Then he shook his head three times and left from the presence of the Blessed One. At that time, the venerable Ananda was holding a fan near the Blessed One's robe, and was fanning the Blessed One with the fan. Then, the Blessed One, not long after Devadatta had left, thought about this matter, and said to the venerable Ananda: "Ananda, go and gather all the monks who are dwelling in the Kalanda place of the Light Garden into the great assembly hall." The venerable Ananda replied: "As you command, Blessed One." Having heard the command of the Blessed One, he gathered all the monks who were dwelling in the Kalanda place of the Light Garden into the assembly hall, and then went to where the Blessed One was, and upon arriving, to the Blessed One

Having bowed to his two feet with their heads, they sat down to one side and requested: Venerable one, if all the monks who closely rely and dwell in the Light Garden Kalandaka are present and in harmony in the assembly hall, may the Blessed One consider that now is the time. Then, the Blessed One went to where the assembly hall was, and having arrived, sat down on the seat that was laid out in the midst of the community of monks. Having sat down, the Blessed One said to the monks: Monks, these five exist in the world and claim to be true teachers. Which five? While their discipline is not completely pure, they claim, 'My discipline is completely pure and without all defilements'; while their livelihood is not completely pure, they claim, 'My livelihood is completely pure and without all defilements'; while their knowledge and vision are not completely pure, they claim, 'My knowledge and vision are completely pure and without all defilements'; while their grammar is not perfect, they claim, 'My grammar is perfect and without all defilements'; while their Dharma and Vinaya are in accordance with wrong explanations, they claim, 'My Dharma and Vinaya are in accordance with correct explanations, and without all defilements.' Although their disciples know this, they do not speak of it because they protect their own thoughts and hope to receive offerings. Instead, they hope to receive compliance from the disciples. Monks, I am not like that. I will admonish you, constantly admonish you, and speak out. I will suppress you, constantly suppress you, and speak out. I do not regard you as treasures, but like a potter who does not throw away unfired vessels, I will keep what is valuable. Please endure my way of speaking. Then, Devadatta said to Kokalika, Khandadeva, Katamorakatishya, and Samudradatta: Come here, even while the Shramana Gautama is present, we must divide the community of disciples and divide the wheel of Dharma. In this way, when we die and the time is ripe, the Shramana Gautama will be left with only a little.
