The Extensive Commentary on the Prātimokṣa Sūtra, A Collection from the Vinaya, The Immaculate Friend. The Extensive Commentary on the Prātimokṣa Sūtra, A Collection from the Vinaya. The Immaculate Friend. In Sanskrit: Prātimokṣa Sūtra Ṭīka Vinaya Samuccaya. In Tibetan: The Extensive Commentary on the Prātimokṣa Sūtra, A Collection from the Vinaya. Volume One, Auspicious. Homage to the Three Jewels! To the four types of morality of the Sugata, which are like silver and snow mountains, like the towering Mount Sumeru, surrounded by a collection of autumn moonlight rays, like conch shells and the moon, extremely clear, like the Kumuda flower, like the Sindhu River, like the Sinduvara flower, like the water of the lotus root, and even whiter than a string of pearl necklaces, by following them, one attains great power and strength, to that I pay homage! The Victorious One, like an ocean, possesses glory, Whose sight is never tiresome, exceedingly profound, Who has no passing of time, To the rich in jewels, I pay homage. In order to make others understand, Entrusted by others, I will now, Compose a clear and illuminating, Extensive commentary on the Prātimokṣa. Although there are commentaries made by others, They do not explain the words, Others speak of contradictory definitions, The meaning is unclear and mostly excessive. By explaining in various ways, Looking at them, the mind becomes confused, Therefore, I will strive to compose, Not for the sake of arrogance. Those great noble beings, Who diligently worked on the words and meanings, Of the Vinaya, they are able, To explain the meanings by their own power. For those who seek extensive scriptures, And those who desire concise meanings, Therefore, in this, I will compile a brief collection, And compose by explaining it thoroughly. This composition of mine, Is an encouragement to the wise, Like a child in the midst of the wise, Not making mockery, without absence. The teachings of the Sugata, belonging to the scriptures, containing twelve branches, gathered into three baskets, namely the Vinaya Pitaka, the Sutra Pitaka, and the Abhidharma Pitaka. Among them, all that belongs to the Vinaya Pitaka was accurately compiled by the noble Upāli, the foremost of the Vinaya holders. All that belongs to the Sutra Pitaka is the Sutra section.

The venerable Kundgawo (藏文:ཀུན་དགའ་བོ།) , the foremost of the Vinaya holders, has accurately compiled it. All that belongs to the Abhidhamma Pitaka has been accurately and thoroughly compiled by the venerable Mahakashyapa (藏文:འོད་སྲུངས་ཆེན་པོ།), the foremost of the Vinaya holders. These accurate compilations were made both during the lifetime of the Blessed One and after his complete passing into Nirvana, such as the Five Hundred Compilation, the Seven Hundred Compilation, the Four Hundred Compilation, and so forth. The history of where, when, by whom, and how these were accurately compiled is as stated in the teachings of the Sugata himself. Here, it is the occasion to make a catalog of the Vinaya Pitaka, so it should be briefly mentioned. The history of the Vinaya Pitaka being divided into four sections and eighteen schools according to region, teacher, and meaning is also extensively mentioned in the scriptures, and the extensive explanation of these should also be understood from the texts of the Vinaya Pitaka itself. Now, here is the occasion to explain the extensive commentary on the Pratimoksha Sutra of the Sarvastivadins, so a brief account of its history will be given. Among them, the Vinaya Pitaka of the Sarvastivadins was compiled after the complete passing into Nirvana of the Buddha, the Blessed One, when five hundred Arhats, including the venerable Mahakashyapa, gathered together in order to make the Brahmacharya last long and to benefit many beings. They requested the venerable Ananda, the foremost of the Vinaya holders, to accurately compile it, and so the venerable Ananda accurately compiled it. The Vinaya Pitaka of the Sarvastivadins is divided into four parts: the Vinaya-vibhanga, the Vinaya-vastu, the Vinaya-kshudraka, and the Vinaya-uttaragrantha. The essence of these abidings and the heart is this Pratimoksha Sutra. These accurate compilations were also made in order to avoid the extremes of adding or detracting from the limbs and slandering for those in the future who do not have the nature of teachings and realizations, and in order to benefit those listeners who wish to understand the general meaning when the words are few, so they are summarized into three types of outlines: the general outline, the outline, and the intermediate outline. Among them, the general outline is the summary of the general meaning into verses. The outline is
