After speaking words of discord, if the monks instruct them with admonishments, even if the monks instruct them with admonishments, they still insist and are extremely attached to that fundamental basis, and then say, "This is the truth, and the others are false," and subsequently name it. For this reason, the Sangha said to Kokalika, Khandadrabha, Katamorakatishya, and Samudradatta: "Venerable ones, you knowingly pretend that some monks are acting hypocritically in order to divide the harmony of the Sangha, and you initiate disputes that will lead to division, holding on tightly and being friends with those people, do not follow those who speak words of discord. To the monks, say this: 'Venerable ones, whether you are good or bad, do not say anything to the monk.' Why? Venerable ones, this monk is a Dharma speaker, a Vinaya speaker. This monk grasps the Dharma and Vinaya correctly with wisdom and subsequently names it. This monk speaks knowingly, not unknowingly. Therefore, do not say, 'What this monk likes and tolerates, we also like and tolerate.' Why? Venerable ones, this monk is not a Dharma speaker, nor a Vinaya speaker. Venerable ones, this monk speaks what is not Dharma, speaks what is not Vinaya. This monk grasps what is not Dharma and what is not Vinaya correctly with wisdom and subsequently names it. This monk speaks unknowingly, not knowingly. Therefore, venerable ones, do not like and tolerate what this monk likes and tolerates. Venerable ones, do not desire to divide the Sangha, but desire the harmony of the Sangha. Venerable ones, be in harmony with the Sangha. The Sangha is harmonious and undivided, everyone is happy, there is no dispute, there is one goal, one voice, like water and milk mixed together. If you can clarify the teachings of the teacher, you will abide in happiness. Venerable ones, do not follow those who divide the Sangha, do not be in discord.

If you say, "Release such a person," and admonish them with the action of entreaty and the four matters. Among the venerable ones, those who can tolerate admonishing Kokālika, Khaṇḍadabba, Kaṭamorakatiśya, and Samudradatta with the action of entreaty and the four matters, do not say anything. Those who cannot tolerate it, speak up. This is the first statement. In this way, repeat it twice, three times. After the Sangha has tolerated and permitted it, the Sangha has admonished Kokālika, Khaṇḍadabba, Kaṭamorakatiśya, and Samudradatta with the action of entreaty and the four matters. In this way, because no one speaks, it is understood that things are as they are. The monks, having heard the Blessed One's teachings, followed the Buddha's instructions and admonished the monks Kokālika, Khaṇḍadabba, Kaṭamorakatiśya, and Samudradatta with the action of entreaty and the four matters. Even though they were admonished with the action of entreaty and the four matters, they still strongly held to that basis and were very attached, thinking that only this was true and the others were false, and they also established names accordingly. At that time, the monks reported this matter to the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One said to the monks: "Monks, Devadatta is able to divide my Śrāvaka Sangha and also destroy the harmony of the Sangha, because there are four monks who disagree with him as his friends, namely Kokālika, Khaṇḍadabba, Kaṭamorakatiśya, and Samudradatta." Devadatta had prophesied: "The Śramaṇa Gautama said that Devadatta is able to divide my Śrāvaka Sangha and also destroy the harmony of the Sangha, because there are four monks who disagree with him as his friends, namely Kokālika, Khaṇḍadabba, Kaṭamorakatiśya, and Samudradatta." I heard about this. After hearing about it, I said to Kokālika, Khaṇḍadabba, Kaṭamorakatiśya, and Samudradatta: "Friends, you should know that the Śramaṇa Gautama said that Devadatta is able to divide my Śrāvaka Sangha and also destroy the harmony of the Sangha.

Ranu said: Therefore, Devadatta prophesied to me, because there were four bhikkhus who were his friends and spoke discordantly, following him, namely: Kokalika, Khandadabba, Katamorakatishya, and Sea-given. They said: Devadatta, if that is so, then it is good. Then, Devadatta, in order to widely divide the harmonious Sangha, began to feign. The division of the Sangha is caused by two reasons: persuading and condemning with things different from the Dharma, and causing one to take vows with that matter. The first of these is that Devadatta made the following exhortation to the Sangha of Kokalika, Khandadabba, Katamorakatishya, and Sea-given, who were in agreement with the non-Dharma faction, other than the harmonious Sangha of the Blessed One's disciples: Venerable ones, the Shramana Gautama eats meat, we should not eat meat. Why is that? Because from that basis, living beings will be killed. The Shramana Gautama drinks milk, we should not drink it. Why is that? Because from that basis, calves will be harmed. The Bhikkhu Gautama eats salt, we should not eat it. Why is that? Because it is produced from liquid. The Bhikkhu Gautama wears sewn clothes, we should not wear them. Why is that? Because from that basis, faithful offerings will be wasted. The Shramana Gautama dwells in monasteries, we should dwell in villages. Why is that? Because from that basis, faithful offerings will not be fully used. Venerable ones, whoever among you desires to be purified, liberated, decisively renounced, patient, and well-grasped by these five places of ascetic practice, stay far away from the Shramana Gautama! Separate! Divide! Alienate! Draw away! Keep away! Dwell alone! He said thus. When he said this, among the harmonious Sangha of the Blessed One's disciples, the Bhikkhus Kokalika, Khandadabba, Katamora
