He thought to himself: 'It is not in accordance with my rule that I, having gone forth, should rise from this concentration. When he rises from this concentration, then I shall go to him.' Thinking thus, he stayed alone in a mountain dwelling. Then, when the venerable Aśvajit arose from proper attention inwardly and outwardly, the wealthy son went to where the venerable Aśvajit was, and having gone, he bowed down at his feet, and spoke various talks that would cause joy and not cause sorrow. He said this: 'Venerable one, are you a teacher? Or are you a disciple?' 'Good sir, I am a disciple, following the path of the teacher.' 'Venerable one, what is the difference between a teacher and a disciple?' 'Good sir, the difference is very great. For example, the king of mountains, Mount Meru, and a mustard seed; the great ocean, and the footprint of an ox; the sun and a firefly; the sky and the hole of a lotus root.' Then the wealthy son thought to himself: 'Since this renunciate praises the teacher and disparages himself, the Buddha will not fail to be supreme, and the Dharma that is taught will not fail to be supreme.' Having thought thus, he said this to the venerable Aśvajit: 'Venerable one, if I may go forth and receive full ordination in the Dharma and Discipline well-spoken by you, and become a monk, I will practice the pure life in the presence of the venerable one.' 'Good sir, you must be permitted by your parents.' Then the wealthy son asked his parents, and having been permitted, he went forth and received full ordination in the presence of the venerable Aśvajit. By reciting and chanting during the day, he became proficient in the three baskets. By meditating at night, he obtained increasingly superior distinctions of attention. He abandoned all afflictions, having been subdued by the nature of falling, scattering, and decaying, with the five moving and unmoving wheels of existence ceasing, and all aspects of action ceasing. For what reason do sons of good family shave their hair and beards, don the ochre robes, and only

Having gone forth from home into homelessness through faith, at the time of that unsurpassed limit of pure conduct, having directly realized it with one's own direct knowledge, and having accomplished it, one understands that my birth is exhausted, pure conduct is established, what had to be done has been done, and one will not know another existence beyond this. The Arhat is free from desire in the three realms, treats clods and gold equally, possesses a mind equal to the sky and the palm of the hand, like sandalwood placed for a long time, the shell of the egg of knowledge has been broken, and has obtained knowledge and direct perception, and individual correct knowledge, turning one's back on the gains and respect of existence and desire, and is to be worshiped, remembered, and spoken of by the gods with power and near power. Then, the venerable Gyadbu Nor arrived at the residence of the venerable Tatula, and accompanied those who were going to the Blessed One, and went to the Blessed One. At that time, the Blessed One was dwelling in the midst of hundreds of monks and teaching the Dharma, and the Blessed One saw the venerable Gyadbu Nor from afar and said: Gyadbu Nor, come here, welcome! You have come in time. Gyadbu Nor, sit down as you would on your own seat. Then, the venerable Gyadbu Nor bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One and sat down on one side. At that time, in Rajagriha, the monks were quarreling because of disagreements about their dwellings, and the monks were harboring resentment towards each other, not doing virtuous deeds, and those virtuous deeds were not increasing, like a blue lotus without water. The Blessed One thought: This Gyadbu Nor, in the presence of the Buddhas of the past, and the Blessed One, the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly enlightened Buddha Light Treasury, had made the aspiration: Alas! When I am a hundred years old in the life of beings, may I go forth in the teachings of the Blessed One, the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly enlightened Buddha Shakyamuni, and become the best among those who quarrel about dwellings. Therefore, this person is assigned to be in charge of the allocation of dwellings for the monks.

Considering this, the Blessed One addressed the monks, saying: "Monks, you should gladly appoint the monk Gyadbu Nor, or another like him who possesses five qualities, to allocate the dwelling places of the Sangha by means of a motion and two acts. Then the monks gladly appointed the venerable Gyadbu Nor, allocating the dwelling places by means of a motion and two acts. When the venerable Gyadbu Nor was appointed to allocate the dwelling places, he properly arranged the dwelling places, so that the monks increased in virtuous qualities, like a lotus in water. When the Blessed One's teachings flourished, the venerable Brahmins, householders, and others prepared food for the Sangha in their homes, but the group of six went to the places where the food was plentiful, spoke rudely, and behaved improperly, and were scolded and humiliated by the Brahmins and householders and sent away. The monks then reported this to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said: "Monks, you should gladly appoint the monk Gyadbu Nor, or another like him who possesses five qualities, to allocate the food by means of a motion and two acts. Then the monks gladly appointed the venerable Gyadbu Nor, again allocating the food by means of a motion and two acts. When the venerable Gyadbu Nor was appointed to allocate the food, he prepared three kinds of food for the Sangha: excellent, middling, and poor. For those monks who arrived suddenly, on the first day he allocated excellent food, on the second day he allocated middling food, and on the third day he allocated poor food. On the fourth day, they knew their own habits and engaged in alms-seeking as they pleased. At that time, the venerable Gyadbu Nor was in charge of the king's guest house, the permanent residents, the donors, the attendants, the allocation of dwelling places, and the allocation of food, so he allocated food to the Sangha according to the rules, according to seniority, according to order, and without transgression. The venerable Gyadbu Nor and
