Those that exist, it is not just because the foundation is seen with the eyes that one should guide such a bhikkhu. If there is a dwelling of snakes there, or a dwelling of scorpions, or a dwelling of centipedes, or a dwelling of ants, it should not be indicated because it is not permissible. If it is permissible, then it should be carefully examined underneath it. If it is a foundation of a king, or a foundation of a stupa, or a foundation of a householder, or a foundation of a heretic, or a summer residence of a bhikkhuni, or there are trees to be cut down, it should not be indicated because it is contentious. If the foundation is permissible and without contention, then the surrounding mud and environment should be carefully examined. If the foundation there relies on a river, or relies on a road, or relies on a well, or relies on a cliff, it should not be indicated because it is not permissible to build. If that foundation is permissible, without contention, and it is permissible to build, and everything is completely perfect, then that bhikkhu should go to the monastery, prepare a seat, strike the gandi (犍稚), and with words of inquiry, truly admonish the bhikkhus, and after the entire sangha has gathered and is in harmony, take off both shoes, place the upper robe on one shoulder, prostrate in order of seniority, squat on the side of the elders, join the palms, and should say this: "Venerable Sangha, please listen. I, a bhikkhu named so-and-so, have sought a monastery foundation that is permissible, without contention, and can be built. I, a bhikkhu named so-and-so, request the Sangha to indicate a monastery foundation that is permissible, without contention, and can be built. Out of compassion, venerable Sangha, please grant me, a bhikkhu named so-and-so, the indication of a monastery foundation that is permissible, without contention, and can be built." Repeat this twice, three times. This is the request for the indication of a monastery foundation. After that, those bhikkhus should not go there out of faith or confidence in that bhikkhu, but in this way, the entire Sangha should go there, or send bhikkhus appointed by the Sangha.

Those should look at that foundation with their eyes, and if there is a snake's nest, or a scorpion's dwelling, or an ant's dwelling, or an anthill, it should not be shown because it is not suitable. If there is a king's foundation, or a stupa's foundation, or a householder's foundation, or a heretic's foundation, or a nun's summer residence, or there are trees to be cut down, it should not be shown because it is contentious. If the foundation is suitable and there is no contention, then it should be carefully examined in the vicinity, one arrow-shot around.
