Saying, "Land should be obtained from the king," the venerable ones thus obtained land from King Prasenajit of Kosala by means of a plan. After it was built, they colluded with the other six groups of monks, took goods from the Brahmins, and began to build a monastery for the Sangha. Then they discussed, "Where should we start building the monastery?" Between Kausambi and the grove of the Singing Temple, there was a sacred tree. Near it lived a Brahmin with a very large retinue. He had five hundred Brahmin boys recite the secret mantras of the Brahmins. When these five hundred Brahmin boys saw the six groups of monks coming to beg for alms, they repeatedly asked, "Hey, six groups of monks, did you get the best food and the first portion? Is your bowl full?" At that time, the six groups of monks thought, "These Brahmin disciples always mock us like this. We should make them unhappy, cut down that sacred tree, and build a monastery there, so that they won't mock us again in the future." So, after discussing it, they took karshapanas, hired many workers, and at dawn that night, they cut down the sacred tree and uprooted all the trees. They leveled the ground so that no one knew where the sacred tree had been. The six groups of monks observed the place with their eyes, marked the boundaries of the monastery, and began to build there. The habit of those Brahmin boys was to take turns every day to sprinkle water near the sacred tree, wipe it carefully, and smear it with fresh cow dung. The next day, it was the turn of a Brahmin boy, and he got up early in the morning and went there, but he did not see the sacred tree. So he ran to his teacher and said, "Teacher, the sacred tree is gone." The Brahmin said, "Hey, Brahmin boy, did you see it wrong? Did the tree go away by itself?" Brahmin

Another child also mocked him and said, "Teacher, this Brahmin's child drank rice wine dregs yesterday, so he didn't see it." The Brahmin then sent another, the most clever Brahmin child, but he also did not see it, and then came and said, "Teacher, it is just like that, that tree does not exist at all." Then, everyone gathered and went, and they also did not see it in the same way. There was a Brahmin child with memory, who said, "Teacher, you recited secret mantras in this direction. I practice, practice in this direction, I don't know what's wrong, how it has become like this." As they were sitting there, perplexed, a man came and said, "Brahmins, why are you sitting there with your retinue, perplexed? O noble ones, there used to be a black tree in this direction, but I don't know where it went last night." "O Brahmin, I saw the group of six monks with axes, adzes, and sickles gathered here yesterday evening, didn't they cut it down?" The Brahmin said, "O noble one, that is indeed so." As they were sitting there, perplexed, the group of six monks arrived and said, "Brahmins, why are you sitting there, perplexed? O noble ones, there used to be a tree in this direction, but we don't know where it went last night." The group of six monks began to laugh. The Brahmin said, "O noble monks, didn't you cut it down? You beggars always sit under that tree and ask us, 'O group of six monks, did you get the best alms and the first food? Is your bowl full?' You always mock us like that, so we made you unhappy like this." "That is the behavior of the monks, the ascetics of the Shakya clan. That is the behavior of the Brahmins. Just like that, that tree was also cut down." They began to insult, blame each other, and curse each other. The news spread from one person to another, and the people living in कौशाम्बी (Kauśāmbī) and those living in other places also heard about it.

Those people also revile, assault, and speak harshly at major roads, streets, crossroads, and junctions. Those who are faithless do not even give alms to those who go for alms. In that situation, the monks reported to the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One, because of this event, this reason, this occasion, convened the Sangha of monks, and having fully observed the ten benefits of establishing precepts, therefore, the root of the training for the discipline of the hearers should be declared as follows: If a monk, for the sake of the Sangha, is to build a large monastery, for the purpose of inspecting the site, that monk should lead some monks to go. The monks who are led should also inspect the site to see if it is suitable, without dispute, and can be started. If a monk builds a site that is unsuitable, disputed, or cannot be started, but for the sake of the Sangha wants to build a large monastery, or does not lead monks to inspect the site, or does not show the site to the monks, he commits a Sanghavasesa offense. The place is कौशाम्बी (Kauśāmbī), the people are the group of six monks, the affliction is unbearable contempt, and the offense is building a monastery. Among them, "monk" refers to the group of six monks or others who commit this Dharma. "Having an owner" means having an owner, or having a woman, अथवा नपुंसक (athavā napuṃsaka, or, नपुंसक, not male). "For the sake of the Sangha" means for the sake of the Sangha of the Tathagata's hearers. "Monastery" refers to a place that can accommodate the four modes of conduct, namely walking, standing, sitting, and lying down. "Large" refers to two kinds of large, namely the large of giving and the large of size. Here, it refers to being large through giving, not through size. "If building" means building oneself or having others build. "For the purpose of inspecting the site, that monk should lead some monks to go," among which, "for the purpose of inspecting the site" means for the purpose of inspecting whether the land is suitable, without dispute, and can be started. "That monk" refers to the one who commits this Dharma. "Lead some monks to go" means that there the monks
